It's really about whether the email is commercial or relationship content. This is a subjective point for mixed emails, and the ACM TechNews email does in fact mix the two by containing banner ads and links to the ACM's social media sites.

Yep, it's up and running. We stagnated a bit over the holidays because most shows were over or on break. Then January we were slow to start back up because our co-founder got engaged. We're pushing several new episodes this week though. We'

That's a great point. We have that signup header on every page for non-users, but it does seem confusing for first-time visitors on the homepage. I'm removing it now.

I think that is an unfortunate attitude. I always opt-out. It's a form of civil disobedience and governments don't like that, so they enact procedures that try to discourage people. If enough people opted out, the whole system would come to

Cool. I love the demo where it's hooked up to a player piano. After a quick glance at the source, it seems like what you do is build a simple Markov chain from the input snippet and then randomly sample it to produce the output snippet. Is

Carried interest is just one of the loopholes that hedge funds exploit that should be closed. When I worked for a quant fund, we were making at least one trade a day, but because we were trading futures contracts we were mostly paying long-

Interesting. Honest question: when were you poor, Paul? According to Wikipedia, you graduated from Cornell in 1986. You defended your PhD in 1990 and had sold Viaweb by 1995. Grad school life is certainly not luxurious, but I certainly woul

Nice writeup, but comparing non-linear SVMs to decision trees and logistic regression is a bit disingenuous. Try comparing the performance to random forests and neural networks-- the differences will be much less stark. Also, in real-world

I'll take a small issue with the end of the article that claims linear programming is used for game theory work in poker. With the exception of Andrew Gilpin's work using the "Excessive Gap Technique"[1], almost no poker game theory work re

$38.99 per project if I want the client to approve estimate categories? Seems pretty steep. Why not a flat, $9.95/mo?

Can't the server mitigate a lot of this cheating by enforcing a matching checksum? That's how Subspace (AKA Continuum) does it, and cheating seems to be fairly minimal.

Just nitpicking here: how is cooperative coevolution a crossover-dependent approach? Are you referring to some specific algorithm?

The original DARPA Grand Challenge was set in the desert on dirt roads. It's not that difficult to identify the road given some assumptions about how roads work (e.g., it's likely to be a slightly different color or texture)

I strongly disagree, though it depends on your definition of what machine learning really is. If you define machine learning algorithms as those that learn from data, then okay. In that case, EAs are reinforcement learning algorithms and ot

I don't think The Oatmeal "fell" for anything. They got even more publicity than FJ-- and it was all positive. Seems more like a classic "pick a fight and everyone wins" situation.
