Same with Photoshop, and Windows, and plenty of others. Intentional or not, the ease of copying these products is what made them ubiquitous.

Interesting… I learned exactly the opposite way and I’d argue it was easier. Feet on clutch and brake. Start the engine. Get used to the feeling. Gear stick into first. Back to neutral. Give it a wiggle, that’s how you know you’re in neutra

Does the C compiler optimise out the branch from the if() statement? I'd write it more like this: int main(int argc, char **argv) { int total = 0; for (int i=2147483647; i; --i) { total += i & 1; }

To debug code that doesn't work, you generally have to fully understand the goal and the code. To write code that does work, you generally have to fully understand the goal and what code to use. So unless you just flat-out don't k

I don't think that's the same thing. To paraphrase both cases to make it easier to correct me: Case you're describing: Person1 makes a statement, Person2 demands that Person1 not act like this. Person2's manner is a litt

Docs are a great defense against clients that demand hand-holding, even if nobody ever actually reads them. If they ask a question covered by the docs, simply point them at the docs and they'll go away indefinitely rather than read som

I dunno about globally but daylight music festivals killed them for me back around 2005. Raves are about staying up all night in a dark room with good friends, good EDM, flashy lights, suggestive clothing and questionable substances. Take a

Unfortunately everything is a collection of things pretending to be a single thing, even single things. The best we can do is pretend, or avoid finding out.

I’m always intrigued by the apparent total disconnect between official inflation figures and observed cost of living. Our weekly groceries have doubled over the past 3-4 years but inflation is in the low single digits so what’s it measuring

A fever dream looks nothing like ADD. If anything it's like a very mild mushroom trip. Did you base this on anything or did it just sound good in your head?

True! A fairly well fitting, inelastic waist line will rapidly inform you of any overindulgence. The key is to then modify your eating and exercise habits until the situation is resolved, rather than exchanging your pants. :D > It works

What goes in must come out. :P If you drink a glass of water every time you pee, then you’re gonna need to pee again relatively soon. The belt just limits how much room you have in the tank.

Doesn’t that just move the source of bias from the reviewer to the coordinator? Some ‘nobody’ submitting a paper would get a crapshoot reviewer while a recognisable ‘somebody’ gets a well regarded fair reviewer.

I've always (well, since Pentium days at least) said you don't actually want your devs using top-end machines, at least for testing and debugging. You want them using the minimum target hardware. That way they'll actually car

I’ve thought about this, a lot. My price is way higher than it once was, but still, if someone came along and dropped $10bn on my desk, I’d hear them out. There’s things I’d say no to, regardless of price, but otherwise things are probably

Everyone has a price, is this meant to be shocking? I mean, I’m disappointed… but I’d have been far more surprised if they’d stood fast with the philanthropic mission once world-changing money was on the table.
