I concur in all the above. The application is responsive, powerful, and well designed.

Wait, I think I know what it is..... Hmm, what's that word.....? Oh yeah..... Privatization! Of course it's less than ideal! In a perfect world, we'd have had a nationwide gigabit deployment years ago. Internet would be a global human right

Interesting point you picked out - I didn't think of doing this either, in my tests with 8 I was annoyed at how difficult it was to get to a shutdown menu. I think the real trial for the OS will be whether people will be able to re-learn th

If your vim is on a box with an X server, look into client/server mode. You can then specify if you want to open a file in its own process or in the server process you spawned earlier. Also, you can set the default yank register to be your

I saw the same situation happen for many classes at Rutgers... I was lucky and didn't get burned too badly, but I know those who did.

I use precisely the same setup, and love it. Full control over every tool in the whole chain. I'd add one more that I find essential: Pentadactyl. Without it, the context switch when using a browser really disrupts the flow.

I've still got faith that with enough patience the editor itself can be made ubiquitous. Pentadactyl is perfect because it creates it's own verbs. Once you grok that a tab is it's own buffer it works as supplement to vim, not as replacement

I was hoping the article would express the opposite meaning of the ambiguous title. You could look at the difficulty of generating a distribution that works perfectly before, during and after install, and see it as a usability problem as th

Thanks for the detailed info! Combined with two-factor ssh auth[0] for using a public connection, looks my gpg file is the perfect solution. [0] http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3029680

Quick question for all you security experts: Which is more secure: LastPass with 2factor, or a gpg encrypted password safe on my home server accessed by a passphrase-locked rsa-encrypted key? I've been trying to decide for the past few week

I think the lack of positive feedback on the blogoweb is due to the the degree that 8 is directed at non-technical users. Many HN'ers and the tech writers we read will be put off by the metaphorical down-talking of the start 'menu'. I doubt

You, sir, are a genius and a scholar. Do you have any idea how many tutorials there are out there that involve some kind of obscure plugin or xclip incantation for something as simple as pasting text over ssh with formatting? To think all I

As much as I wish this were true (I've been gunning for the MS downfall forever), I doubt it will be the case. My (non-technical) girlfriend recently needed a reformat, so on a whim I installed the 8 RC to see what her reaction would be. Sh

I know it seems like a big jump, but once you've gotten the swing of things you'll wonder why you ever bothered worrying. Don't worry about learning all the benefits at once. Make your shell look exactly like what you've got now and figure

Precisely. I was a diehard chrome-lover until I tried pentadactyl. Now I realize that any tiny reduction in perceived speed (not due to slower JS or loading, but probably some of chrome's UI speed tricks) is made up for by the lack of a con

Again, it's all perspective. iPads just work, closed game consoles just work. Linux can just work (until the next update) but a lot of the time it doesn't. And that's just the way I like it, because in the end (for me), its the only OS I ca

Welcome to every Mac OS upgrade I've ever encountered. Although, I can't place the blame entirely on Apple. I find that for any consolidated release OS, a reformat is ALWAYS the way to go (after waiting a good long time for all the bugs to

You must have felt the same way I did about the original Google Wave announcement. So much potential squandered by a poor design team. I've always hoped some developers would turn the code into what it was meant to be.

As much as I love the mockup, in the end I probably agree. Microsoft's core branding strength in the consumer market is its "genericness". Look at the new homepage - very standard US families using MS products. While Apple's aesthetic appea

I'm toying with the idea that the problem is due to Apple and Microsoft's decisions to obfuscate the entire metaphor. With the unix filesystem, "/" is the quintessential representation of the ungraded, unlimited hierarchy. Once I understand
