I'm starting to think today the word startup means a non profitable company that only exist, because interest rates are low and investors don't have any better options than invest into them.

That sounds like if the public institutions line Twitter, they should sub their own federated Mastodon server so they are in full control of it.

There is actually a ticket on github and is getting some attention now that would allow to combine multiple communities to make them seen at one (kind of like multisubreddits)

The servers are connected, you can have account on one server and talk to people in communities on other server. Kind of like with email, you don't need to have account with Gmail to send an email to friend on that server.

That's because by default Nix uses glibc (which is huge), while Alpine uses musl. You can create musl binaries, but you need to know Nix a little more and know how to cross compile. Another great thing is that you can can easily modify

Theoretically that would work, in practice it doesn't. Making distroless containers is the way to go.

OP was arguing that today the big size doesn't matter, because disk space is cheap. I was providing argument that it still does.

If your container is big it also takes long time to fetch and start it

If you use Nix that's pretty much how the container will be build. You specify that your app should be there and Nix, being aware of all dependencies will place inside everything needed.

It's really hard to explain it because Nix is a paradigm shift (I think that's why it is hard initially grasp it). But you can use it for things like: - declare your application with all dependencies explicitly, so when someone el

Nix builds things in sandbox (no network access, no file system access etc) this can make creating derivation for application that has build with side effects a frustrating experience, but that brings reproducibility (or at least gets us re

So I so far use it for dev environment and also for CI pipeline (the benefit is that Nix allows caching between runs, it helps with things like: - getting dev environment on CI to be identical to user dev - with minor changes the project is

Nickel is a programming language. While HCL is just a configuration format, so not really comparable. Here's a comparison with similar tools: https://github.com/tweag/nickel#comparison

The thing with nix is that features are experimental for a very long time, even though they are quite solid. It seems like it is mostly used so they can still make changes, like the CLI options or the names of attributes in the flake. The e

I wouldn't say that GIL will never be removed, but I believe the GIL cannot be removed without breaking a lot of existing code. That means there could be another drama with migrations if that would be done. I think the most likely way

The OP didn't even bother to read the conversation. This was announced in April, but Reddit did not provide prices. It only assured this won't be as expensive as Twitter API access, and the drama started once it actually did.

For the kind of service they are providing I think the logging is appropriate. I mean if DOJ is interested in PyPI logs the only reason I could think of, is if it was used as a supply chain vector into breaking in into other organizations.
