The old reddit at least (I don't use the new UI, as it is absolutely horrible) had option "allow my data to be used for research purposes" it wasn't for AI but I would imagine anyone who opted out from it, would also no

That's pretty much how building on nix works, except you don't need base image or your application file, you specify what command to run from which package and it will be placed in the container with all runtime dependencies autom

The Nix idea is to start building with a known state of the system and list every dependency explicitly (nothing is implicit, or downloaded over net during build). This is achieved by building inside of a chroot, with blocked network access

You can absolutely build a reproducible image in Dockerfile if you have discipline and follow specific patterns of doing. But you can achieve the same result if you use similar techniques with a bash script.

In that case streamDockerImage produces script that you run then you pipe output to skopeo or docker. nix2container wraps all of that and it automatically runs it in behind the scenes when you call nix run. The whole image generation is muc

The big problem is how docker was designed. It is essentially a jail that is supposed to contain a Linux binary. Things are straight forward on Linux. You build your binary, place in a docker container and you are done. The nix code will al

One way of thinking about Nix is like A Makefile on steroids. It will build what is needed for the right platform. It is also smart enough that you can add cache server and when it needs something that already is in the cache[1] it will dow

Rust, sure, but typing in golang isn't superior to python's type annotations. Also Rust became a quite popular tool for python extensions, where you can offload performance to rust and business logic to python.

I don't believe this is a big issue, typically package authors just use $output variable which returns whatever path the package should be stored at. The real reason for it are libraries. The binaries that are packaged in /nix
