Isn't that kind of the point of hiring an expert? If you knew the provenance of an item, what it was worth, and how it was obtained, why waste money on hiring an expert?

This might be great for the FBI right up until they actually try to use the evidence in court. The defense attorney can claim (rightly so) that unless they can examine the unlock method to verify it doesn't tamper with any of the data
