The author did a really good job of articulating why I've spent the last several years working on Zulip despite there being a thousand Slack clones to choose from. Asynchronous communication is essential to being able to focus, at leas

Losing their independence was from the beginning the most likely outcome of building something that's hard to monetize like Keybase on the VC funding model. FWIW, I doubt Keybase offering a paid plan would have raised revenue that

Just to be clear, Zulip is not Open Core. We are 100% open source software, in contrast with Mattermost, GitLab, and many (most?) other VC-funded applications marketed as "open source". I think this is a really important distinct

This is, fundamentally, the Open Core business plan, which Mattermost is executing quite successfully. You get all the marketing benefits of being "open source", but few IT departments will use your software in production withou

I'd say the big thing is helping us avoid reinventing the wheel. There's a lot of problems that every webapp has, and Django provides a system for solving most of them. I particularly enjoy their migrations and automated testing

We've supported Debian in production since 2018, and we're close to supporting RHEL as well. And even if we only supported Ubuntu, there's a lot of benefit to providing an installer that works on every Ubuntu LTS release; m

Right, our recommendation is to run Zulip on a dedicated VM or container, which I'm sure is how Mozilla will install any self-hosted chat software. For context, the background for that advice is that most folks who want Zulip to share

We've been really happy using KaTeX as the LaTeX rendering engine for Zulip; it's super fast, and the fact that you can do the rendering on the backend (and just serve HTML + CSS at display time) is really nice.
