There are services that might be used rarely, but they're still critical. Therefore you either implement a heartbeat-like approach where the monitored system indicates regularly that it's alive, or use pull. Using exporters might

On desktops, yes. Other companies have been moving everything to the web, where telemetry is easier and more thorough.

Normally yes -- a bit similar to e.g. when a game is displaying a seemingly 'static' image (when you don't move your character), then the GPU is still rendering at X frame/second.

Aside from speed? Nothing. Similarly to the desktop CPUs. More cores are just one way to achieve more speed.

It does not. If you have e.g. QHD on a 13" laptop, then it's cool because 2x scaling works. On my 32" 4K display, it's bad because I'd need 125% or 150% scaling, not 100% or 200%.

It is a wonderful resource, but doesn't solve all trouble. It specifically says that the only modern DE that supports hidpi scaling well is KDE. Gnome hidpi support is crap (no fractional scaling), Unity is going away. Sway and the res

Depends. If it's a short job, then setting up a new VM for it or even planning where it should run might take a few engineer hours. And engineer hours are really expensive.

What should they 'know'? If they can use it for their purposes then it is, per definition, usable. It's like saying that 'most cars are unusable for getting around'.

That's not exactly true. On Linux, it's a real shit show because only KDE (Qt) supports proper fractional scaling, GTK apps don't. GTK supports 100%, 200%, and so on. You can play with xrandr, but that'll cause serious o

Nope. KDE is a microproject when it comes to money -- they don't pay to Qt devs afaik. Automotive companies, etc are the actual customers.

JVM start-up time is below 50 msec. Is that so slow? (Measure a simple hello world, and you will see.) Any slowness above that comes from your code, not the JVM.

Yes, I have Xeons in my WS. The reason why many people ended up buying Xeons for the desktop is core count -- i7 had 6, then 8 cores until recently, so a 10-18 core workstation could only be built with Xeons. The other difference is ECC, wh
