Gorhill has to me always been a beacon of integrity. I always feel a bit uneasy about browser add-ons and the people in control of them and I am really thankful for not having a single worry about installing ublock origin on any browser I s

This article frames power grid integration across the European continent as a solution to unpredictable power production from wind power for each country. This makes less sense when you factor in that the wind is highly correlated in nearby

In highly competitive physical sports there would no woman at all in the olympics for example. The 100m dash woman world record has disputed legality and sits at 10.49s. That is 6339 fastest recorded time for men. Not having gender separate

I completely agree. I fear that the lack of a common cultural ground will make society even more individualistic, antagonistic and enforce the existing tribe mentality even further. It is also something I don't see getting any better.

My worst search experiences always come from the features applauded here. Word stemming and removing stop words is a big hurdle when you know what you are looking for but get flooded by noise because some part of the search string was ignor

Tobacco tax does not make or break any budget, at least not where I live. It is also taxed with the intention of reducing sales, which in turn reduces tax income. This is also by large the result.

The "some ISPs" is really important here. This is very much a US thing, I don't know as much about the situation in Canada, might be as bad. I really hope that this is not the begging of a roll out to the rest of the world.

Rack space can be quite expensive. Sometimes you need a lot of computing power in one or two rack units. Would be interested in what the management pains are. I agree that 2 socket machines require more thought in a lot of scenarios, especi

Kernel scheduling is NUMA aware and will localize workloads. Threads will mostly have their RAM on the sticks local to their node. The core the thread is delegated to is also more likely to be the core local to the disk or NIC being used fo

While I agree about the tiptoe part I have an instinctive negative reaction to the nudge argument. I do not see a clear difference between "What every X should know about Y", "Programmers hate this one weird gamma trick"

I can see that there are manufacturers selling log houses certified for cat-5 (245 mph) hurricanes. I do of course understand that any construction will be blown away at some point, I just cant picture it. The way the logs lock each other a

Wood houses do not burn very well. Pure wood houses (think lumber cottages) are especially hard to set fire to. The things that do burn are furniture, paint, drapes etc and are present in any house.
