Atopile is another thing in the circuits-as-code space: https://github.com/atopile/atopile As a half EE/half SWE I think there are significant benefits to circuits as code but I'm not impressed with this one.

When a model reads "dog" it associates the patterns it gleaned from the text and images about dogs - its past 'experiences'. What is the difference in kind between that and animal understanding? LLMs do have language-agn

This is somewhat disingenuous IMO. Language models do NOT explicitly tag parts of speech, or construct grammatical trees of relationships between words [1]. It also feels like motivated reasoning to make them seem dumb because in reality we

Thanks for your awesome work Greg! The success of o3 directly contradicts us being in an "idea-constrained environment", what makes you believe that?

Dunno about Frink but both qalc and pint allow any units and mixing and matching, in qalc you can do something like `1in^2 * 1m to gal` or `1 ly / fortnight to mph` and get as complex as you want. I use metric except when converting t

Interesting project. I use command line Qalculate [1] for this (has a very similar feature set to Frink AFAICT) and Pint [2] for scripting. I feel like unit-aware calculators are hugely underused by physical engineers, it's the same id

There's a pretty big difference, a picture of a murder might be used as evidence but itself is not illegal.

Claude 3.6 (new 3.5) and 3.7 non-reasoning are much better at pretty much everything, and much cheaper. What's Anthropic's secret sauce?

For magnets, one that Dangerous Things used to sell (discontinued due to low volume) is encased in titanium, even better than bioglass. I have it in a finger and it'll last until I get it removed or die. I also have an RFID/NFC im

Did you misread? No one mentioned LM studio, open-webui (frontend) is open source and usually uses ollama (backend) which is also open source. Jan and Librechat are both less popular than either open-webui or ollama, how do their features c

The new idea is already here and it's reasoning / chain of thought. Anecdotally Claude is pretty good at knowing the bounds of its knowledge.

If I knew beforehand I was getting one I would have it removed. If not (incapacitated), someone has gone through an MRI with my same magnet and just felt strong tugging, not even really painful and definitely not ripping-out-of-finger stron

I have their Titan magnet in a ring finger. Unlike all other magnet implants it does not degrade at all because it has a titanium casing, so it will last good as new until I die or remove it. I can feel AC with it very easily, because the m

The report criticizes the pilot for ejecting, but also says he did everything by the book (F35 manual), but the book was wrong. And the pilot should've figured that out? Feels like they just need someone to blame for losing the plane.

There were a number of things in this that really surprised me as a non-physicist with decent physics knowledge. I didn't know how fast everything moves in the nucleus, that misshapen/elongated nuclei are possible, and halo nuclei

Just like with most other criticisms I've seen of AI, this seems to be criticizing the hype around AI, not the technology itself. It isn't clear if the author conflates those but a lot of people wrongly do. AI isn't one to on

To me, AI is clearly on a trajectory to be more intelligent than humans in a few decades or less, even if it isn't that smart now - the funding and talent going into it these days is just crazy and there is no fundamental difference be

I don't think this bill would be that effective, but I do feel that if we as a species don't do something drastic soon, we won't be around for a whole lot longer. And I'm not sure if it's even possible to do somethi

I must be in as much of a bubble as the author is because I genuinely don't understand how people believe this. This piece is centered on the media around AI, not AI itself. Tons of business people and journalists are quoted, no people

The goal of most/all machine learning is hunting down performance maxima in a super high dimensional space. In this case the space is the positions and angles etc of the atoms that comprise a protein and the "performance" is
