Sure, on paper we should all carefully consider every decision we make. However, in practice I’m confident the vast majority of Mastodon and Twitter users (including myself) don’t consider using either service particularly important or dese

Perhaps Mastodon is just too immature at this stage for the servers to really differentiate themselves from each other. However, as the number of users and posts on Mastodon grows, will any server actually be capable of adequate moderation?

At the time I signed up for Mastodon and a server, I didn't consider and wasn't presented with any of these questions/answers or other points of differentiation among servers. I guess that's part of the issue: when an or

Sure, but as the number of users on the federated service grows, how do we not end up in the same place as email today? Does it not become good moderation policy to auto-block all new and small servers (e.g., self-hosted email servers) if y

That’s exactly the problem with replacing Reddit with a federated service. The opposite is true with replacing Twitter in which case it’s difficult to explain why a user has to pick any server at all.

I agree with the premise of the article. I’m a new Mastodon user trying to give the platform an honest shot, but I can’t understand why I would choose any particular server over another. Why choose anything other than the pseudo-default Mas

I’m sure you’ve heard of Amethyst, but it does address at least a few of your concerns. Particularly focus following the mouse and conflicting shortcuts.

Your own comment doesn’t include any specific examples of these communities, which I think reflects the big problem: discovery. As big as HN is, I rarely see it mentioned anywhere that’s not HN-adjacent. I’d love to hear about some of these

You can’t overlook the fact that doctors also work about 1.5–2x standard work hours. About 60 hrs/week is on par for most doctors. Many surgeons will be putting in 80 hrs/week or else take a pay cut. Adjusting for that in addition

Excel is a generic spreadsheet program that's designed to be used by 90% of people for 90% of use cases. Accommodating for this niche use case will definitely break things for many existing users. The real solution is for geneticists (

John Carmack did a 5 hr podcast with Lex Fridman recently [1]. Moving away from Meta seemed like something that had been happening slowly over a long period of time. [1] https://lexfridman.com/john-carmack/

Many todo apps do this including Things 3 and OmniFocus. What you want is a task that recurs on completion as opposed to one that recurs on a schedule.

I generally agree with your point, but the difference is that the dangers of most new technology can be reasonably contained. Deep fakes will undermine people's trust in anything they see or hear, which is a severe negative. It's

I wouldn’t characterize it as “paranoid about litigation”. Lawsuits against physicians are common, and you absolutely have to consider the small but real risk of having to defend your actions in court. I’m a physician and see this play out
