Every community needs people that are congratulatory as well as those that are critical. Lispers love their language. But they are also self-critical and open-minded. They tend to work hard to see how ideas in other programming languages ca

Of course since Clojure is built upon abstractions, and because it's simple to introduce your own protocols and extend them to existing types w/o conflicts - it's straightforward to reintroduce the concept of a "pair" where the right-hand s

I didn't miss that point, and I didn't say neuron. What set of neurons in a bee's brain is the ODE solver? Can we provide our own inputs and experimentally show that that specific set of neurons actually occurring in nature do what is

Sure. But the point here is that your simply presenting another theory , possibly as far-fetched as the one presented in the original article.

Whether artificial neural nets can approximate ODE's and whether neural networks in nature actually do this is not clear. Biology citations please. EDIT: To the reply. None of those papers state that evolution causes naturally occurring

No, for that perhaps Geiser+Viper-mode in Emacs would be suitable.

Heh, not so fast, that's not first class access. Python has this problem as well, in order to have a uniform higher-order accessor to Objects, Lists, and Dicts, etc. you need to hack together some ugly functions. It's also why OpenStruct ex

If all you want to do is learn the beauty of Lisp don't waste time mucking around with arcane (and great) editors like Vim or Emacs. I'm using LispWorks 6.0 Personal Edition to work through Norvig's PAIP - no headaches.

Scala (implicits, structural typing) and Clojure (protocols, extend-type) both have great solutions to these problems. Anyone know of other langs that deal with these issues properly?
857.
by swannodette 16y ago
So true. Rails are Django are massive improvements but they do not in anyway represent the endgame in terms of controlling incidental complexity.
858.
by swannodette 16y ago
Not true at all. I encounter incidental complexity all the time when writing code in Java, Ruby, and Python. Especially when I need to interface with other libraries and other frameworks. Ruby, Python, Java deal with the expression prob

I don't think Clojure's goal is to be "better Java". Rather, that for whatever task you might consider Java, writing that task in Clojure should be: * easier to write * perform just as well * be concurrency safe Clojure isn't the

I don't think it's an unfair comparison at all. Comparing Clojure and Scala can only generate interest in a few small (though growing) communities. You've done an excellent job of showing Clojure's benefits to a much, much wider audience -

Missing the point entirely. I don't want your module. I want/like your design and I want to provide my own implementation .
866.
by swannodette 16y ago
This is short-sighted. The key point in your statement is "I". Contracts are not about "I". They are about everyone else. You have a great design and interfaces allow you to share that .
867.
by swannodette 16y ago
There's a difference between having a language feature (or it's possibility) and actively encouraging it. Far too many classes are bag of a implementation details with no thought for a design . In Clojure you can't just declare methods wil
868.
by swannodette 16y ago
Because it allows programmers to define a minimum contract for behavior. Instead of having to subclass (and being implicated into a hierarchy) you can instead provide any object as long as it satisfies that interface.
869.
by swannodette 16y ago
Dynamic languages like JS, Ruby and Python could greatly benefit from explicit support for interfaces as well. I'm enjoying the fact that Clojure brings this powerful abstraction to a dynamically typed language.
