For the people out there who live in Emacs - Give Emacs + Wanderlust a try. It has a nice imap implementation, you can prefetch the mail, work offline, have multiple imap accounts etc. Previously I was using Mutt + offlineimap

I use wget for the same. I usually call it from gnu screen, to update the status line with the no. of unread mails unread="$(wget --secure-protocol=TLSv1 --timeout=3 -t 1 -q -O - \ https://${gmail_login}:${gmail_password}@mail.google.

hmm, Linux? After trying many clients, I have settled for rTorrent (libtorrent.rakshasa.no) which is quite lean and terminal based (so that I can wrap it in a Screen session) It supports OS X as well.

Did you try Gnu Global? I mostly use it for C/C++, but it claims to support "C, C++, Yacc, Java and PHP4".

You are right on some fronts. It does require some work in Emacs to set up the ideal dev. environment. I mostly do C/C++ stuff. I use gnu global for code tagging and navigation [1](aka "goto definition" thing). As for project organization,

Did you try Wanderlust(emacs)? I previously used to have offlineimap(gmail) + Mutt. Wanderlust has wonderful support for IMAP.
