Yes, I'd say having more social workers on the streets and shelters following up and offering care options for those who are mentally ill and dysfunctional would help the problem. But there's not really funding for that.

That is especially interesting since they also did massive QE like the US. So it seems other factors are at play.

Another problem is the cost of housing. Even if you want to join a startup in the Bay Area, it's hard enough to pay the rent/mortgage on a big tech salary, let alone a startup salary.

Only #2 is affected by the Fed/QE, points 1 and 3 would still be true. And look at Europe for an example for what would have happened without our Fed's intervention. The ECB did too little too late and this led to massive youth un

I don't know, you'd have to look to studies. Anecdotally, my first generation friends had parents who didn't come on study or skilled worker visas. They are all net contributors to society and many sacrificed a lot to get the

Um, not much? Immigrants as a whole pay their way in the United States, have lower crime rates. The revenue generated by Google, Chobani, and other companies is not "Mickey mouse" money. Not to mention that Microsoft and Google bo

Not sure what is optimal, but I find melatonin 30min before the normal bedtime in a new country helps a lot (3mg day one, 1-2mg days two and three; 3 days total).

The article is referring mainly to people who have no choice but to have their own home/apartment demolished. I doubt most people, even YIMBYs, would argue for that. The real issue with NIMBYs is that they want to abridge the property

The embedded street view of a five-story "Khrushchyovka" actually looks pretty nice. Very green, narrow streets, and car-free passages between buildings. My mom lived in a similar style building in Poland. The quality wasn't

Hmm, interesting. I know medicare reimbursement rates are still quite low compared to private insurance, so I wonder how that squares with a 'no negotiation' policy. Edit: One study from Texas found that Medicare reimbursement rat

It sounds fanciful to say that we'll just use our existing Medi-cal budget but now it will cover everyone. If the government had so much bargaining power, then Medicare and Medi-cal would already have far smaller costs. We don't r

How much are your housing costs? Except for people who got in with rent control, I see very few apartments that cost less than $2500, and that's for a single bedroom.

That's a decent argument to say immigration wasn't a real concern (that was the second counter point I mentioned). Although it does seem like a fair bit of Leavers voted because of migration (at least according to polls).
