I use Swift at my job, and all I can say is anecdotally we've had a ton of problems with memory safety. - Swift has a feature where you can unwrap a nullable which is basically just unusable, as it completely crashes the entire program

Swift is a ridiculously far cry from a memory safe language.

This was the standard of South Africa as well not too long ago. I was just musing that it's funny how quick you get acclimated to complete dysfunction.

Kind of funny that this warrants a news article. I've been living in South Africa for the last couple years and this is basically just normal. The municipality just doesn't pay the water bill, so we don't have water half the

You can tell it's fake by the LinkedIn-y prose, which is always short sentences followed by a "mic drop moment."

Tangential but I was surprised to see that tree(1), at least the popular implementation, is made in Terre Haute (which is where I'm from). Maybe I should invite the author for lunch or something :)

Cool, I wish this article was available when I made my custom cartridge design :) For my game Cubeat[0], I put an OPL3-L chip on the cartridge connected to the GB's otherwise unused audio-in pin, which allows for FM music in the game.

Nice, last time I used this it was actually written in Crystal. I used it at the time to render VGM files, very handy and fast. Author is nice and responsive as well, I reported an odd issue with a VGM I had and she responded quickly.

Cool stuff for sure, I've been brainstorming making a language that has some of the same characteristics as Jank. I'm jelly that you took the opportunity to work full time on this for a year, wish I could do the same!

Pretty wild, I've been collecting a few ideas myself about a "dream language" + runtime that I eventually want to make for myself, and it shares a lot of characteristics with this. Looks really cool.

It always blew my mind that "dependency injection" is this big brouhaha and warrants making frameworks, when dynamic vars in Lisp basically accomplish the same task without any fanfare or glory.

I think Go will do it, but I indeed enjoy Free Pascal for this as well. It's also nearly trivial to set up cross compilation using FPCUpDeluxe, so I've shipped applications to clients on Windows when I do all development and compi

From experience I've found that Prolog excels at anything to do with parsing. The one thing I miss in every other language is DCGs especially, and any time I need to write a personal script that reads and writes some file format, I alw

Hacking isn't just about computer programming, you could call it a philosophy.

Yep, that's it. The host is (for the most part) fine, but there's either some problem with httpd or the PHP worker pool where it just dies after some number of requests.

I just restarted the webserver. It's running on OpenBSD HTTPd + MediaWiki + SQLite, and keeping it up has been a perpetual thorn in my side. Oh well. I need to figure out some alternative setup probably.

Algol 68 actually isn't too bad of a language to work with, and there's a modern interpreter easily available. Unfortunately it lacks all support for reading and manipulating binary data so I think a Minecraft server would be near

Yeah, note that this article is from 2016. I distinctly remember during that time that these hot-swap deployments were all the rage in the Elixir community, and then fell out of fashion with time.

Holy crud, I figured they would guard this for a long time and I was really salivating to make some stuff with it. The doors are wide open for all sorts of stuff now, Advanced Voice is the first feature since ChatGPT initially came out that

This thing is truly a technical marvel and a massive accomplishment by the developer. He works tirelessly and at one point closed out every one of the hundreds of issues filed on the repo before it's 0.6 release. The number of supporte

Great article. One question I had, not to diminish this hard work, is why not use a different implementation like ECL which is pretty portable already and can compile to static C code which can just be compiled traditionally for the target?

I used this a while back to do some conversion of XML into JSON data, it actually supports rendering JSON as well. Surprisingly flexible and ergonomic language, it's kind of a weird beast.

I'm working on a game written in Common Lisp that I'm planning to publish on the web, compiled to WASM. ECL can compile to WebAssembly and I recently hacked up the SDL2 binding to successfully work.
