One interesting tactic that we had at Yahoo and have adopted at a start-up (which includes several ex-Yahoos) is the "stand-up meeting", where the idea is that we all stand (as not to be comfortable and not have the meeting drag on for hour

The discussion of epoll/select does talk about the event-driven scenario and there's the discussion of simplest web browser (one procession for all connections). Memcached is one example of a purely event driven application. Another example

Should be a mandatory read for anyone who wants to talk about "scaling". There's lot of armchair discussion of this topic from people who have never looked at UNIX networking from a below-the-surface level (or don't even know about select()

There isn't any pain. Best of all it's easy to setup hadoop on a single machine, or two machines here and there and then them into a large cluster: Here's a good tutorial that may help: http://www.michael-noll.com/wiki/Running_Hadoop_On_Ub

Interesting article. I like the optparse example, I've always implemented these (Object oriented wrappers for getopt/Getopt::Opt) by hand in Perl (and re-wrote the code every time I went to a different company). I find it much easier to use

Move when you need to take advantage of something only SV (or other start-up hubs) have to offer. For now, use Amsterdam (cheap, existing network) to your advantage.

Depends on what you're going to use. Cygwin makes it easy. Using ActiveState + Native Win32 MySQL is going to be painful (I didn't have much success getting DBI/DBD::MySQL working in that environment, but that was a few years back).

Setup the distro you'd like to run in production in vmware. Learn from there. Set this up in production. Fully understand that running your own server means carrying a pager (or your cell phone with SMS as a pager).

I've lost over 50-60 lbs since last year. Bulk of it (30-40 lbs) was within ~5 months. The way I did it was mostly through exercise: at the peak, I was doing an hour of cardio a day, 5-7 days a week. I began (in December of 2006/January of
