It’s commonly thought that the seeds are the spiciest part of a chili, which is the impression Matticus_Rex seems to be under. In fact, the heat comes from the white pith (which they mentioned) and ridges around the seeds.

The one topic from “hard” computer science that applies to package management is graph theory. Inverting a binary tree is one of the simplest operations you can do on a graph. Google may have been interested in Howell because of Homebrew, b

Yep, it’s network effects. All my friends were impressed by Square Cash’s ability to instantly transfer to their bank accounts for a small fee, but nobody wants to install another cash app (and another virtual wallet) to use with just one f

Curb cuts in LA also include a sheet of small yellow nubs right before the street. The ADA calls these “detectable warning systems” [1], intended for sight-impaired folks. I feel bad because I always assumed they were there to interfere wit

That's an interesting workaround. The question I meant to raise was whether a workaround is justified, or whether software developers should just maintain the apps they sell.

The Mac App Store makes it impossible to charge for software customers have already paid for? Tragic.

I didn’t mean to imply that Disconnect is compromised. But I think the background of the team would prompt a fully open source product on every platform in order to establish trust. Until that happens, why not use a blocker whose team does

Disconnect was co-founded by an ex-Google DoubleClick (ad) engineer, and hired an ex-NSA (dragnet surveillance) engineer. There are tracker-blocking adblockers for every platform that aren't made by people with anti-privacy backgrounds

There are many reasons why you might use a systems programming language [1]. > System programming requires a great degree of hardware awareness. Its goal is to achieve efficient use of available resources, either because the software its

Neither OCaml[1] nor Haskell[2] has performance competitive with Rust. It’s impressive how many high-level functional features Rust was able to include, but it’s ultimately a systems language—and it’s unique precisely because it’s a fast sy

I checked the date to make sure this wasn't an old April Fools' joke. The new design language is minimalistic, but it's not simple, and doesn't reflect the programming language at all.

When I say libav*, I and most people mean libavformat, libavcodec, libswscale, etc.; the C libraries that form the basis of the command line tool and are widely used elsewhere. libav (no wildcard) is a fork of FFmpeg that is broadly focused

I wrote a small tool that translates AdBlock Plus filter lists into hosts file format [1]. It can only translate simple domain-name rules but might be of interest to people in this thread. [1] https://github.com/wwalexander&
