Block the ads. You have every right to do so. There is zero obligation to watch ads. If a company like Google can afford to operate a service like YouTube, then putting it up in the first place is the cost of doing business. I happily block

If all one wants to do is communicate securely with another person and what your typing is private but not "illegal", then why even send email. Simply use the Drafts in GMail. Compose an email and leave it in Drafts. Each person a

These may be true, but yet other countries don't do this. I once worked with an American guy who served 5 years in the French Foreign Legion. This poor guy played hell when he returned to the US after an almost 5.5 year absence. The Le

I disagree with having to effectively pay twice. I've lived overseas for a total of 8 years and the tax rules suck. I'm back in the US now, but when I did work overseas, taxes were fairly complex. My UK family and friends didn

All courtesy of the Monroe Doctrine. The US thinks it should control the entire hemisphere. Also interesting for American citizens living and working overseas: if you work overseas, even for a completely foreign entity with zero US operatio

SUSE was my first distro in college back in the late 90s. My first job was my exposure to Debian, and I've been on it since. Distro hopping is fun. The issue with OpenSUSE is it's huge unless you do a minimalist install. yast is a

Debian is far and away the most stable distro out there, arguably more stable than RHEL. Many people and organizations, including serious research facilities use Debian for this very reason. It's also free as in freedom/free as in

What you say is true, but this is changing. Red Hat became valuable as a set of skills, because they developed a certification system that is provable. Those are not paper tiger certs. They are earned. While I don't personally have one

Yum has been largely replaced by dnf, which is far and away better. Despite being a Debian/Slackware fan since 1998, I do find dnf quite nice. It's still a fair bit slower than apt or pacman, but it's clean and easy to use. S

Because Debian is not owned by a corporation. Who knows what IBM will do with Red Hat. We all know that massive corps that buy smaller ones usually don't treat the smaller corps very well. They often buy them for the patent portfolio o

I'm in a situation similar to the one you describe. It's an interesting world us contract IT folks live in. I'm honest with people even if it could cost me the job, but they like having someone around in case something goes s

An old Unix admin mentor of mine always said to "do the simplest thing that works properly". I've always tried to do this and it's great advice.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting. Sadly, here in The Woodlands area, last year the O&G industries laid off tons of IT people. Loads of people suddenly found themselves with no jobs or working at Home Depot to make ends meet. My own nei

I don't get out to your area often unless I'm heading towards SA and the Hill Country. What's the tech scene like out there? Any purely IT companies or is it IT for services, schools, etc?

The Woodlands is a great place in the Houston area. It's north of the city and a fairly varied place as far as Texas goes. There are tons of companies, tech and otherwise here. Housing can be expensive by Texas standards, but would not

I agree with you. I'm here because this is where my wife is from. She's a Houston native and wants to be near her parents. Mine are dead and she and our children are my family, so it works for me. Socially, Texas is a backwater. T
