It was such a staggering leap! In my memory this was a bit different though, or more nuanced at least. There was progress towards smartphones starting halfway the 90s, then somewhere around 2000 there was internet access and the first dev

Almost definitely so. Like Youtube telling my epxerience will be 'better' if I login, each time again. But it won't (well, apart from me not to having to click the button each time). How low can you go as a company?

True, but that's orthogonal. You could still set up double-blind studies comparing taste, I think.

Companies optimize for what customers will pay for Could be, but arent't there other mechanisms? Like companies optimizing for profit, then using advertisement to lure customers in paying for it?

Wouldn't be surprised if there's a relation between taste and nutritional value though.

You'd already need to know this is about trackers. Ok this is HN but that doesn't translate to 'people who know their way around in downloading anything they want' or so.

Use "-e" to set ssh options, just like with scp On my rsync -e sets the executable, and my scp doesn't have -e but -o. Even then it's a bit of a stretch (or I'm missing something); e.g. for the ssh option I use ms

Certain ant species can eat ticks, but as far as I'm aware there's no species feeding only off ticks, and Lyme and Encephalitis are really nasty. But it's an interesting question: suppose we can somehow erradicate all ticks,

Doesn't hurt explicitly mentioning the biodiversity crisis is, just like the climate one, also a pressing issue. And when it comes to solutions revolving around forests (or a collection of trees if you wish), it's the area where b

It's a fair point, certainly interesting, however most or all of it is an assumption (you didn't try the other thing in an elaborate way, let alone double-blind-tested it), plus it might not work like that for everyone. In the pas

Sounds vaguely familiar, and indeed I had bokmarked a site which did this exactly (just more elaborate, IIRC was built as a complete tutorial). Site ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7450528 ) is dead now unfortunately,

Wrt insulation I really meant law, not standard. I hope there are no laws limiting the size of radiators? That would not make a lot of sense i.e. story sounds more like whoever was in charge of calculating the size completely messed up.

Yes unfortunately it's not uncommon at all that certain industries effectively get subsidized for their energy use and/or pay less taxes on it. In an ideal world that could be adjusted as well though but realistically that's

The 'small %' and amount of times something can be recycled does depend on the material involved though. So while typical plastics are hard to recycle and a lot of it doen't even get sorted and hence goes straight to landfill
