"you have a team or you don't" should be read in the context of the sentence it appeared in - I do agree there is a spectrum, the point was that you cannot somehow make a team from a bunch of people if they don't go along with each other we

"team building" is like an arranged marriage - either you have a team or you don't, trying to force it doesn't yield any results and usually it's just an euphemism for being forced to do stupid things, most often to get drunk with everyone

A static compiler has nothing to do with static typing, it is just a traditional compiler that passes through the source code and generates the final result of the compilation in one shot, as opposed to a byte-code JIT compiler. I guess the

I doubt mathematicians commonly use zero as an index of the first element of a collection. Matrices and vectors which are closest to arrays are indexed from one. In the aleph notation aleph null is different from all the other alephs becaus

Seems like I'm in the minority here, but just yesterday I found an off-by-one bug in my small project for my dissertation, that was sitting there unnoticed for months and I started thinking about how ridiculously stupid is the fact that zer

I think Clarke's first law applies to programmers as well: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."

Can you back up what you said with any link or quotation? I did not find any mention of the word "axiom" in McCarthy's 1960 paper ("Recursive functions of symbolic expressions and their computation by machine"). Google for "axiomatic system

The term "axiomatic system" is consequently misused in the article. Probably the author had a "formal system" in mind, an axiomatic system is one in which one can deduce theorems from axioms and I don't think lambda calculus is such a syste

I have just written a short blog post about this: http://www.stifflog.com/2011/05/15/why-is-rails-startup-so-s... I'm not that deeply in Ruby/RubyGems/Bundler internals to be 100% sure, but on the other hand I really can't see how it coul

I have investigated this in detail and the reason for this is really ridiciulous - 80% of this time is spend on executing "require" statements and this is due to really bad design of RubyGems and/or Bundler. They both do their job by augmen

There clearly still are performance problems in Rails 3.0.x that aren't fixed. I am just now in the process of switching an application to Rails 3 and I have recently spent 5 days of hard work trying to investigate a big performance drop af

I do not know Haskell enough to fully judge this, so maybe someone can correct me, but that seems _very_ minimal. From what I understand, it doesn't even have arithmetic operations, it "executes" incorrect programs without any error (try re
