This post is very timely. Recently I developed some type of "learned helplessness" where I felt that shitty situations were being thrust upon me and I was drowning. What I was missing is that I had a lot of agency over these situa

This is addressed: "Yes, this is a selfish and transactional view of relationships. But that's the point of this whole post: If you can't justify being nice for the sake of others, at least be nice for the sake of yourself.&q

I just read the Making of Crash Bandicoot blog post series. This limitation is why Crash Bandicoot had a camera-on-rails to limit the number of polys on screen, right?

When I was a kid, my friends would play a game where we go around in the circle and add one word to the running sentence. Most of the sentences sounded exactly like this script.

Another speculation: Some software identified Windows 95/98 using some equivalent of osName.startsWith("Windows 9"). Naming the OS "Windows 9" would mess with that.

Unfortunate naming for a Python library. It conflicts with a python standard library module: https://docs.python.org/2/library/pdb.html EDIT: Misread this. My mistake.

You're right that more technical areas (ML, algorithms, maybe even systems) expect more advanced degrees. But there is far more demand for standard development/architect roles and even those roles command a generous salary.

Interesting that software engineering in the Bay Area is the other way around. There are such high salaries being given to bachelor's holders that it is hard to justify the opportunity cost to go to a Master's/PhD.

Yeah, I see JQ as the grep/sed of JSON. If there were a curl-analogue that constructed HTTP requests from its output, it would take me a lot of the way there. But more generally, I'm dealing all the time with a hodgepodge of json,

Have you tried running the original through a high pass filter (to get the textures) and applying it over the vectorized version? It might work for the background texture, though it would probably suck for the text.
