What kind of diagnoses are you interested in learning about? This may be too rudimentary, but I found ‘The Linux Command Line’ a good book to build up skills and knowledge. Also I would say: don’t try to force it. People write a lot about r

Oh yes, I'm going to try and see if they have data on me and send a number of GDPR requests if they do. For others from the EU, it's very easy to do using: https://www.mydatadoneright.eu/request

If anyone is interested in this type of thing I would recommend reading ‘Seeing Like a State’ by James C. Scott. It is one of those books that makes a point so definitively that many articles on the topic could just be appended as examples.

It is somewhat strange that Python does not have a binary tree in the standard library. I also couldn't find any discussion on the topic either. It might be a nice contribution. Edit: it was coined a few times on the python-ideas maili

Same! It works flawlessly on mobile as well, 60 fps without any frame drops on my iPad at least. Tap and drag to move, tap with an extra finger to jump, tap edge to rotate. Really cool stuff! Edit: the reflection in the water is a nice touc

Seems like a fair enough price. I don’t know what the deal with the developers is, but I hope it enables them to make quality games rather than the ‘free’ dopamine clickers that dominate the charts now.

Cultures that differ the most from author’s require most context to be understood by author? Hardly surprising. The quoted source is an anthropological work from 1959, a time when anthropology still wanted to be a natural science. These sor

If you were looking for the reason why a regex cannot parse HTML, it is because HTML has matching nested tags and regex parsers are finite state machines (FSM). What this means is that a regex parser is like a goldfish. It only knows about

I do the same. Writing things out is a good way to play around with a thought; reshape it, morph it, look at it from different angles. A thought in my mind is too abstract, fleeting and formless. A comment on paper is forced to take a shape

Apple hardware has been rough in the past couple of years. Personally I’m glad. In 2015 I was their target ‘new programmer’ that should buy a MacBook Pro, use Xcode to make my first iOS & watchOS app and start selling it on the App Stor

I didn't know about Ledger [1], which this is said to be based on. It seems like a proper UNIX tool like Remind [2] but for finance. I would really like to use these types of applications all the time, but either usability suffers a lo

On HN people often like to see the math. It's very understandable that you would keep the secret ingredient, well, secret. But readers are just looking at a opaque magic number now.

Not OP, but I could see the fun and value in an immutable and distributed record of a board game. Cheating would be very hard, and I imagine a passionate player feels good knowing the platform will exist for as long as there are players, an

Just something to think about: many people simply avoid people who have a default mad, cynical or otherwise negative attitude, but they wouldn’t say it to their face. The badass might say ‘Good riddance!’ (or “Can’t handle the heat? ...”),

For this exact reason, in music theory, the perfect fifth is seen as a note that amplifies/emboldens the root note of a chord and does not add a particular harmonic color. In jazz it's often left out to open up chords more (i.e. n

There is a pitch on the Swift forum to encode only the file name in a binary instead of the entire path, or hash it. The OP there makes some points about file size, even. https://forums.swift.org/t/we-need-filename/

Hm, I don't agree fully. There is zero hardware innovation for digital keyboards at least. Some old electronic instruments are 'vintage'; what makes a Moog is the vintage Moog sound, so yes, you can't upgrade from there.
