Wasn't there once some sort of experiment of admitting a random sample from a college application pool? Couldn't find it on the spot, but I think it had some similar results to the PhD admission experience. It also does make sense

Actually I am quite happy about his list this year. Great to see a business related book making the top of the list. Seems to me a shift from "the world is full of problems" towards "the world is full of opportunities".

If there were HN "elections", my guess would be it came somewhat close to 40% Democrats, 30% Libertarians, 20% Republican, 10% Greens. I would say Democrats would have a tough struggle to win a majority.

Same here. It seems that GMail wants now to "friendfeed" my mailbox. I don't know what that whole "overwhelmed by email" issue is all about. If you are getting 100+ emails a day and believe these are all relevant fo

Interesting but what are you guys making out of it? Are you trying to get towards a more strategic mindset? Or what are the main take aways for you reading military literature?

Somewhat sad to see the cyber security war narrative becoming the top voted comment on hackernews. Until the public realize that they are themselves the target of those cyber security war activities by their own government, those revela

Fortunately this is happening in an undemocratic country and not coming with the typical terrorism / save-the-children propaganda. I hope we soon can hear about the benefits Google glas will have for example on enforcing Dubai's s

Totally see your point. The true value of a program like this would be the personal network, recruiters on campus, etc. It is going to be a lot of work to create a similar team spirit in a virtual context. By the way, the Harvard Extension

Interesting idea - the main thing I would object to is because it's the one place where you can have $4 million of "wealth" tied up in a house and not raise an eyebrow. If you go to any first world capital/metro region

I saw GoPro offering a "music" edition of their cameras making me assume they would deliver some decent quality in low light, indoor, close-up situations. The concept is absolutely genius but it seems the market is all going for t

Some of you seems to know the market quite well - here is my question: I would like to have a GoPro alike Cam for mostly indoor usage (low light) with exchangeable lenses (for interviews). I have used a GoPro3+B in the past and like its siz

Not sure. It is probably about delivering results. If you get these by being a dictator this reflects of cause on your personality even more than when you are just deflecting it on "the team".

I never understood why somebody would not find a way to arrange themselves with these types of situations. There seemed to be three option, either actively start a movement to change the system, or position yourself to profit from the syste

Of cause! Pretending to feel oppressed seems to be the thing of the moment. We need to staff every industry, company, college course based on a race/gender/etc quota!

I think the difference between male and female "testing" is often just in the rationalizing process e.g. if you were approached by girls since the age of 12 you would have established by now unconsciously some "filters".
