I've also found that closeness can happen by just spending time with someone. For example. - A weekly lunch with a colleague. - Meeting a group of friends for a fun activity.

"I mostly talk to people if one of us needs something, but not much besides that." Have you tried to speak to people just to chat and see how each other is doing? What about a club or activity you can enjoy with other people?

I think you hit on a good point here. - The job should pay enough - The work environment should be healthy and supportive

"trusting in what life will provide" is a bit new-age I feel. The analogy is comforting. But maybe something more realistic would be like this: -- Picture two hamsters. One works constantly to pay off his hamster-mansion, and hams

I think off-site backups are the way to go regarding the fire scenario. Having a print out of where your financial assets are located is a good first step for the scenario you die. This way your next of kin can track them down. You should s

I was that guy in the office who would volunteer to help move equipment or furniture for office events. I made a lot of friends. My boss would make fun of me when my good deeds would result in hassle for me. She was a meanie. I have been re

This is actually an interesting question. - If you find £10,000 cash in the street, do you keep it? - If you find a watch in the street, do you keep it? - If you bought a laptop from your cousin Vinny for $50 and found out it was stolen, do

Less than 1GB is pretty easy. Copy-1. Compress a copy and email it to your self. Copy-2. Burn to a DVDR and keep it on your shelf. Copy-3. On a USB stick and store where you keep your passport. Copy-4. On your rolling backups (you have back

The study proved discrimination based on gender. I would say that being discriminated against is pretty harmful. I think laws are written something like: "employer cannot discriminate based on a person's gender". Which covers

Given how cheap SSDs are now, unless you are living below the poverty line, buy a 500GB MX500 for ~60USD. You deserve it :]

Your office got off lucky. We had a guy walk into our office behind employees. No one challenged the trespasser... he walked off with a stack of laptops.

So true. Each time I was hired, I was expected to learn on my own time. The best I could get was a $30 book paid for. I kinda assumed the company was responsible to train you. The only training I received was when I volunteered to be first

I've worked in many software companies. We had lunch time/after hours boardgames at every single one. OK, I was the one organising it, but still. Plus we got paid well. Win/win :]

I moved to Germany a few years back (was born and raised in the UK). When I saw the 4%+ just to the realtors... I was pretty shocked. I swore to my wife that I'm not paying almost 20K to the person giving me a tour of a house. Seems li

You sound like you're trying, which is good. As the other poster said, maybe don't expect so much. For example, I'm a total wimp. I forced myself to do go-karting because the big macho guys wanted to do it. I hated it, it was

This is what I'd recommend. 1. Backup to external SSD or NAS. This is the backup you will rely on if your PC loses all data. It will be fast to replicate to. 2. Mirror the external backup to a second external SSD. And sync it every wee

As a QA myself, every project I've worked on except maybe one... has had good shared ownership of quality. Maybe it's because we were embedded in the dev team. Sorry you didn't experience the same thing.

As a QA Engineer of 15 years, I see some good simple points here. I would always hire a little more QA resource than you think you need. Nothing worse than signing off new features but not having the time to think outside the box and find o

I feel this is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. If every coder paid £100 for a programming language/compiler, I'm sure it would also have a great UI and UX.

Any spreadsheet software will do this. =money_in_account*(interest_rate/12) I would advise to start with a spreadsheet and then move to custom accounting software after you are used to keeping track of numbers.

If some people cheat, doesn't make it a universal trait of that culture. Would you hire someone with an Indian name who was born and raised in Canada? Just trying to gauge the cut off.
