That's an interesting question. I'd be inclined to think The Wonderer has no use for a computer. Their life is mostly about survival, food, shelter... But when society is again ready to automate calculations... it's only a hu

I can relate to this. I'm one of those people who usually had a little too much work to do, but still felt bad when no one else volunteers for a task. Often I'll offer to take it. I'd end up enjoying work less & less and

I think it's amazing what you can get these days in terms of used desktops. I've been down that route many times. In fact, all my machines are workstations work was throwing out each refresh cycle. So I didn't even pay. Just

Yeah I did in fact quit that place. My main gripe was that my manager seemed to be having mental health issues (manic over-talking and occasional hints of psychosis). WFH was what helped me last through the covid years as I could avoid her

Reminds me of one job, my boss was looking to leave, and was handing over portions of her job to the rest of us. I said I don't have time to do more additional work... she said they can send me on a course to better manage my time. hah

When we returned to the office, my boss decided even a single day WFH was frowned upon. Having to beg to stay home for a dentist appointment became a big ordeal. But my boss was a bit unhinged before covid. I found it funny that my lockdown

This was around 15 years ago, so maybe before the big recent stories about undercover-cops fathering children with their marks and vanishing etc. I got the impression this lady I met was a little un-hinged / manic. Although more than c

For me, I was in good shape in my 30s. Then the weight started to creep on. Now I've been having my first meal after lunch, exercising more by walking and snacking less. Too early to tell how it goes long term. I'm trying to be a

I can believe that. I went to a vegan restaurant once and met some randoms in London, I think it was a meetup.com thing. And one lady was telling me how she would happily take a lead pipe and hurt people working in animal testing. I was sho

There are valid arguments on both sides of the issue. What do you think would be the best way to help ensure everyone gets a fair share?

I think focussing on salary alone isn't a great strategy. If you doubled everyone's salary, the gain would almost certainly be absorbed by real estate or some other necessity. Regulations on maximum working hours, access to fair h

Maybe send down a landing party or two and hang out with humans for a bit incognito. Knowing about us isn't the same as interacting with us. At least that's what I think. As for actual communication, it's a tough question. My

I'm not up to date either, but it's probably along the lines of "there's aliens, you have to take my word for it". If mental illness or being mistaken only affected 1% of people... one percent of 7 billion is a big

I was having a conversation with a friend at work about a conspiracy theory loving colleague. I asked if it's possible to be good at your job while believing in far out stuff. My friend said "seems like it". But I have a feel

As a middle aged man, I was constantly telling my wife that the team responsible for the game have done something truly amazing. Or at least that's how it seems to me with my personality and preferences. The game design is top tier. An

Recently, it has to be Grounded. I put in a lot of hours. I was often thinking about it when I went to bed and when I woke up. Although games are a big hobby of mine, that level of excitement about what I plan to do next and how to reach a

It was a Netflix WW2 documentary. Most likely "WWII in Color: Road to Victory". We switched to Disney+ at the start of the year, otherwise I'd have been able to confirm the show.

I watched some documentary where the US were monitoring enemy communications but didn't know what a specific code word was referring to. If I recall correctly, the US staged a fake transmission that one of their islands had some issue

Maybe I don't fully comprehend what you're saying... but is it even possible to do this? I mean what if at some point particular entries were manually tweaked and the database was updated to fix an error in an invoice or something

How is the beelink? I'm really tempted by the price and what you get. But I've never bought anything that wasn't a well known brand like Dell.

Maybe this just shows that I have some experience under my belt... but I understand that most things take longer and cost more than planned. So the thought of scrapping a working factory with decades of fine-tuning already done... pains me.

I know what you mean about discussing TV shows or music with friends. At school, me and my bestie at the time would quiz each other on the previous night's episode of Star Trek. How lame we were :]

This was interesting to read. Is it based on experience of living in Japan, or research? I found the part about companies looking after the employee really interesting. Having worked entirely in Europe, I've found most managers screwin

I guess it's possible if this conferred some survival advantage. It can be useful to work from the evidence to a conclusion instead of the other way round. But wondering and philosophising can be fun :] It would be cool if humans could

I was tempted after a colleague got the FP4. In the end I decided to get a pixel 6a for half the price. I'm taking a bet on not smashing the handset. €300 extra was just too much for a replaceable battery. Atleast for my usecase.

This is cool and all... I just wish someone would release a device with user replaceable battery and better OS update policies. Basically a pixel with slightly easier repair. I think the modular aspect is cool, but seems like a gimmick that

I figure watches have been around for a few hundred years, so they were perfected over time. Smart watches have been around for like 10 years, so maybe in another couple decades we can expect efficiencies in power consumption and power stor
