I'm sure it cost a lot more than $8000. That was only the direct visible cost to them. There were likely users hit with costs for the additional downloads, who never even knew what was the issue. Users working on a mobile hotspot who h

Yep, my first job was at a company like that. Huge Windows desktop app built in Delphi. No automated testing of any kind. No testing scripts either. Just a lot of clicking around.

It's absolutely way too frequent. Their users do not care about their screen recording studio anywhere near as much as the devs who wrote it do. Once a month is probably plenty. Personally, I disable auto-update on everything wherever

I'm really surprised this could happen. As they note: > Write your auto-updater code very carefully. You have to be soooo careful with this stuff. Especially because your auto-updater code can brick your auto-updater. It looks l

Just some feedback, I think this would be much more compelling with better choices of messages. It feels like the first two words are setting something up and the third should have some kind of payoff, but a lot of the messages don't w

Wow, that's a really fascinating problem to work on. I work in mapping but haven't actually come across this field of what you call DGGS's. Is it essential that the cells be the same shape? Also where does the name "A5&q

The capitalisation in the HN item is wrong, it should just be "Icônes". It's just the French word for icons, nothing fancy.

This entire story is based on the very questionable assumption that Amazon did this deliberately, for which the evidence is slim. I mean, there are tons of reasons to dislike Amazon, without looking for something this thin.

I wouldn't say CSV is a display format. Attempting to edit it by hand is pretty error prone, and reading it is hard work.

A generation or two (25-50 years) would be an incredible result. These days it's a miracle if anything has consequences more than a year or two down the track.

One small silver lining in all this is perhaps that it is such a clear cause and effect that people will remember in future. So many economic levers take many months or years to really play out, but everyone can grasp that the president imp

I hate this kind of format. It's trying to be both a data format for computers and a display format for humans. Much better off just using a tool that can edit CSV files as tables. Also it doesn't seem to say anything about the he

51% of gross revenue is absurd. You make a video with a bit of this music in the background, now your project is probably losing you money.

Yeah I went through a similar process as a kid. I remember learning trigonometry in high school and realising I was way ahead because I'd been using sin and cos to calculate positions of 2d spaceships for years...

The problem I frequently run into on various platforms is shows with some occasional foreign language that is meant to be subtitled. I end up getting either no subtitles (and it takes me a while to realise that I'm meant to understand)

You should try renting in New Zealand. It literally is a step back in time, lots of companies mostly rent very old (20 years plus) Japanese models. So cheap though.

I had an experience travelling across Kyrgyzstan recently in the middle front seat. The gearstick was just to the side of my leg, but changing gears invariably meant hitting my leg with it. It was a long 10 hours.
