Lobotomy was once state of the art and the last one done in the US was 1967. Experts and gatekeepers who think they know better are not helpful here.

Agreed, this sound like astrology for the Stanford set. Baffling.

Wouldn't be HN content without using the word orthogonal somewhere in there and this didn't disappoint.

The next generation of devs became focused on their tools. Explosion of programming languages and frameworks. Cloud and all its vendor lock in. Agile. CI/CD pipelines. K8. Constant re-invention of the wheel just because. Lunatics

Exactly. Most people are bothered to see how rich folks like this waste money when most people struggle to survive. Being paid ok in tech does not make me feel any closer to the sort that spends 250k on a fun trip.

Best ‘methodology’ I’ve used in my 26 year career was a simple spreadsheet of items - manager would read them out loud at a meeting and whoever was interested would volunteer. After that, up to you to make it happen.

I don’t see why that would be insulting at all. If you didn’t grow up in that world, you can’t understand it really - having it explained to you, studying it, or emulating the situation today can’t replace an era from the past. I’m not of

Just build it in a way you can swap a new one in without interrupting business and always have at least a couple alternatives live. They will 100% screw you at some point so that has to be planned for and designed into the system as well a

What is so insidious about moderation is you could have a moderator removing posts for whatever reason they like and you will simply never see that content or even be aware it was removed. I’d love dual versions of subs - moderated and unm

He still sells out huge stadiums all over the globe, so at the very least he’s getting his point of view communicated to a much larger audience than most people could manage, so potential influence.

School is ‘upskill’. You can work while you go to school if you want to, no need to interrupt school. Just get it over with.

We don’t, at least not all of us. I’d much prefer simple automated spam filter and site wide rules. This is how most forums I used prior to Reddit worked. I loathe the idea someone silently removes posts or bans people for whatever reaso

You forgot people that don't want any narrative and would prefer to see all the content as long as it doesn't violate site wide rules.

The host of a podcast having total control of a community seems like the perfect example of illegitimate control. I'd assume they'd remove any critical discussion to the point it would devolve into their own personal website wher

Good names that pull traffic by themselves are what is finite. /r/startrek is much more valuable than /r/startrek1234 or any other forked variation.

Why not instead charge 3rd party apps for the API and let the 3rd party apps show their own adds to help pay for the cost of the API?

Damn. I didn’t know it was gone. That hits hard. Obviously I hadn’t been in a while, but back in the day chowhound made eating my way through Chicago such a blast. That’s really too bad. Thank god the home brew digest still lives.

That's just not true. If the old mods have left and set it to private before they did that, all that's needed is to simply make it public again. Admins can do that. No need at all to start a new one. They have no right to squat

Some people feel that way. Me, I'm all for basic site-wide rules and automated moderation, as little as possible, and let me decide on the rest. Open it back up. There's no way it should just re-direct people to a competing sit

And for those of us with no interest in following the mods, can /r/Startrek be opened again? If the old mods moved platforms, there’s no need to keep this private.

I’m in my 40’s and I don’t know anyone at all around my age who talks about gender at all, let alone often. Many in my generation grew up with the view that those are just a bunch of stereotypes which are not helpful and should be ignored.

Same story from a restaurant owning friend except the sales rep called him a second time offering to remove negative reviews as a service. Simple extortion like the mafia.

Understanding the sunk cost fallacy and having an opinion like the authors are not mutually exclusive. It doesn’t always apply and shouldn’t be used as an excuse to abandon whatever one feels like without guilt.
