Nobody owes you free labor, but it's a world of uncertainty. People don't like uncertainty. Will this labor be priced reasonably, at around the same level that I value it, or will they pull a vmware and ask for my first born?

Exactly. And I did a poor job of mentioning this in my previous message. But that perspective comes from trying to rely on Kompose to migrate my apps over to Kubernetes for me, and then falling utterly short in every aspect that makes Kuber

It's possible that those platform engineers did a poor job exposing kubernetes to the developers, in the anecdotes you've mentioned. But there is a LOT more being instrumented in an effective deployment platform than just deployin

On the subject of Kompose, frankly, I think a person looking to get into Kubernetes either knows how to convert what is essentially a docker-compose file to kubernetes manifests themselves, or they're going to struggle working with kub

Yeah, the way I read it, it boils down to "I worked on Docker. Kubernetes is great but too complex for developers to actually use." Which yes, is something that everyone who isn't fooling themselves has been saying since its

Kubernetes isn't the platform. It's an extremely complex platform that enables better (meaning "more purpose built and friendlier to use") platforms to be built on top of it. Kubernetes is a big box of tools. You can eit

That's fair. I guess if you just need a VPN, it doesn't really make sense to consider a product that packs all of these VPN-adjacent features. But part of my point was how much you're able to do on Tailscale for free, so in t

I renew some of my LetsEncrypt certificates monthly, which should be plenty, in my opinion. Gets you about 2 buffer cycles to notice the certificate isn't updating and recognize an issue in your automation.

I'm really interested in what you're comparing Tailscale to internally, because it does way more than just VPN. What are the cheaper options, and do they also have an SSH feature, oauth authentication to the network for automation

That might be it then. I'm around your age from the US, and the cell phone plans I grew up with were not prohibitively expensive, even for my somewhat modest household.
