Actually, it seems more an effort to establish credibility. "I have a degree in such and such" or "I have worked in this field for over 20 years". That seems to be much different than appeal to authority.

I admit I was a bit disappointed by the end of the article. But I don't think it was strictly an appeal to authority. The author is evidently a very good writer, but he might have done a better job at summing up a conclusion. It&#x

If there were no snarky English teachers and pedantics to point this stuff out, think of all the knowledge that would be lost. The English language has a rich history and expansive vocabulary.

Calling it an "indignity (perhaps with a racial dimension)" seems to me to be a classic case of mind reading another's motivations. There is a much more obvious motivation that is more than plausible: the desire to not get sh

I've been hearing that for the past 40 years in some form or other. How many times did we only have 10 years left? At some point, you have to question why you assume they are right when they have been wrong so many times. And who is

I'd be wary of all or nothing platitudes. Not only is it mentally unhealthy, it's also highly destructive to consider our relationship with the environment an adversarial one. Most of straightline projections are wildly off the

"the world going to shit" carries a lot of assumptions. It's not just about amassing money. It's a bout survival for many people. Getting enough food to eat. Up to 100 million people (mostly Africans) could be facing

There are environmentalists who have notably pulled back on the global warming alarm bells. Shellenberger and Lomborg are two notable examples. They still agree with the science, but think the rhetoric only inflames things and leads to u

The formula is very clear. When mankind has access to cheap and affordable energy, they prosper. When they don't, they struggle. And it's not about getting rich. We've already spent trillions on "green energy" a

We stop extracting it and we're back in the 19th century. The whole economy runs on the stuff. From energy extraction to product development involving anything made of plastic. That's not going to change any time soon. That&#x

It gets harder to change such habits the older you get. Not so much in terms of ability. They can change, but it's less likely they want to take the time to do so. They know this, that's why it's important to target the y

Maybe that's why shorter men have a stereotype of insecurity. Napolean complex. They are not really less secure, their head is tilted up more often.

I think this is looking at the head tilt. Not eye contact or the position of the head. The example photo on the site illustrates the concept. The woman is clearly making eye contact in all three photos, but her head is tilted up and leve
