It's been a long time since I worked at Google but when I did (10 yrs ago), the search system for the intranet was notoriously awful. Part of the reason was that PageRank tends not to work so well in places where things aren't hea

In fiction (and film particularly) these sorts of characters are often a narrative device so that things can be explained without needing an omniscient narrator.

Interesting. I assume Tesla will never sell a car with lidar because it would be a tacit admission that the hardware associated with a bunch of Full Self-Driving sales was never going to be able to drive itself. I suppose there's nothi

Burnout was an obvious cost to this mess. A less obvious cost must surely have been all the people that read about it and decided to never work for Uber. But then it's always been easy to ignore the costs that can't be measured.

I wonder how much of this is a deliberately cultivated form of eccentricity. To be clear, I am casting no aspersions here - use what you wanna use! But the perfidy of spell check and auto-correct seem like fairly easy problems to avoid if y

It's not meta analysis. Also, the effect size is rather large. What basis do you see for doubting how well the study was done?

Heh. Technically, there isn't even GATTACA in there since it's RNA and hence all the T's are actually U's. It's just convention to use the T's. GAUUACA doesn't have the same ring to it.

I used to encourage back-end web developers to write a web server from scratch as a learning exercise. With HTTP 1.1 it was actually pretty easy to write one in C (plus berkeley sockets); the idea being that you learn a lot about how things

Probably not exactly the presentation you mention but Freakonomics explored the issue of advertising effectiveness in a 2 part series. Part 2 is about online ads. The picture it paints is pretty bad. https://freakonomics.com/
