You'll be happy to learn that Python's builtin tarfile module extracts and overwrites `../parent/paths` and `/absolute/paths` at those locations. Never use Python.

Pretty sure there's tons of C libraries that do not use hash maps because it requires implementing a hash map.

From mold I learned this amazing trick of intercepting the exec() family through LD_PRELOAD. I was experimenting with it in the Spack package manager to force a uniform compiler and linker, and let it inject flags. Useful since packages som

The point is not about parallelization, it's that nixery has to optimize for cache reuse, which is an artificial problem created by docker. If you have two layers installing an individual packages like /nix/store/x and &

I like how they optimize for layer reuse, but at the same time, nix doesn't really fit docker layer caching because it's better. With a unique prefix per package, you don't need stacking of layers. You can just download a bun

In Nix and friends, they don't do relocation at all. So you know where the libs are on everybody's filesystem.

Linux usually (by convention) provides 1 file and 2 symlinks per lib: liba.so -> liba.so.x -> liba.so.j.k.l. The first one is to make the linker (ld) happy: -la will look for liba.so. The linker puts the SONAME (liba.so.x) in DT_NEEDE

I've tried alpine's gcc before and it was about 50% slower to compile a bunch of packages. That said, if you compile llvm with MinSize/-Os on glibc distro's it runs 50% slower too, so it's unclear if slowdown is due

It seems though that glibc was inspired by musl to move away from many small shared libraries to a single one, namely the dynamic linker executable also being lib{c,m,...}. It's not at the same level, but it's progress...

My gripe with linkers is: why can't they add the minimal metadata recording the actual paths of the shared libraries an executable or shared library was linked to. You can provide search paths to the linker with -L and LIBRARY_PATH and

What's kinda neat about musl libc is that the interpreter/runtime linker and libc.so are the same executable, so that if you just dynamically link to libc, it does not need to open ld.so cache or locate and load libc.so.
