False choice. One does not have to live off ramen at a startup to do those things.

Maybe startups, instead of going for the lavish offices, should put more of that VC money into salaries and health benefits. Or try to offer a better work/life balance. This entitled idea that startup founders have that they can pay sh

I really do not trust that line of thinking.

No. You cannot make that argument. Not in the slightest. It is an appalling and abhorrent argument. Suppose after having the children, one partner turned abusive. You would have them stay in that relationship. You would say it was a choice.

But that's not really due to automation. That's due to R&D.

I don't lament automation in itself. I lament the mass loss of jobs, and the inability for people to feed their families. And unfortunately, those that have been hardest hit by automation just voted in a government that does not give a

"People don't need to work at 9-5 jobs to be happy" I'm guessing it's going to be extremely difficult to be happy when you're struggling to afford food or keep a roof over your family's head.

THAT IS NOT A FLIP SIDE. The solution to being upset about one entity being able to sell your data is NOT to let other entities do it too!

See, I don't buy the market based arguments. This is not something we want anyone doing, regardless of ISP. So why allow it to happen at all?

That's entirely incorrect. The Republicans own actions, and absolutely nothing else, portrays them in a bad light.

"The lesson here really is that if the issue is really important, then get an actual law passed instead of trying to contort regulatory authority based on laws from the 1930s." That's silly. That's like saying phone does

No. Just no. Seriously, what is your intention with that take? Huh? "Hmm, other people had it worse at one point, so I should stop trying to better my position." Seriously, who does that benefit? Absolutely no one.

"What if, on the other hand, your managers suck so much that good and bad workers perform at the same level? In this case signaling to your people you don't give a crap about them puts you in a powerful negotiating position."

Other people having it worse is absolutely no reason to chastise others for trying to better their lot in life. Doing so is absolutely despicable.

I would disagree hugely, as the working people still need to buy food and pay rent.

You'd still be working the same amount of hours. Why ask for such a pay cut? If you're willing to take a pay cut, cut the number of hours.

I cannot put the blame on workers who have the fear of God put in them that, if they don't kill themselves for their job, they won't be able to provide for their families. This is a management failure, full stop.

Not surprising. People are tired of working long, useless hours for nothing other than to make someone else rich. Workers haven't seen meaningful pay increases in a long, long time. Most haven't seen a vacation in years. No wonder

Yes, it is. The tech industry is bad at it, period. Other industries being better or worse doesn't change that fact.

You say that as if Uber didn't have it coming, or that it's not Uber's fault. Every single thing that has come up is a direct result of Uber's actions and culture, things that the CEO is ultimately responsible for.

No. Your post is completely off base. No one said anything about removing code reviews. They said remove the culture of aggressive and mean code reviews. No one said to remove the opportunity to express one's love of geeky things or or
