The US standard (if you get paid holidays at all) is 10 days in most workplaces. 15 is relatively generous. I did work at a University that gave some employees 24 days plus holidays, which was fantastic, and institutionally tolerable becaus

I think this is a reasonable strategy. It's easier to lower prices than to raise them. This is a relatively novel experiment in publishing and as far as I can tell it's totally boot strapped. I'm happy to pay for this essentially "at cost"

Re: wanting to pay but not needing the "pro" version -- I feel the same way about Jing. I use it almost every day and I think TechSmith deserves my money, but I really don't need any of the features of Jing Pro.

I'm surprised this thread has gone on this long without reference to the DevOps movement that is looking to address this process problem. One good link: http://www.jedi.be/blog/2010/02/12/what-is-this-devops-thing...

This may be one component of the success of Google advertising platform versus other online advertising options. If you want to make a significant spend on advertising with a large publisher (or set of publishers) you pretty much have to

Yes. One reply mentioned transloadit.com just launched. This is also in Drop.io's vision for where they're going in the future. Transloadit.com preprocesses the images, which are great for use cases where you expect you'll need all or most

This reminds me of one of my unexpected favorite reads: Jane Jacob's "Cities & the Wealth of Nations" http://www.amazon.com/Cities-Wealth-Nations-Jane-Jacobs/dp/0... She argues that cities (more specifically, city-regions) are the mos

I think the fact that only big players (Amazon, Google) have had any success at all in this area is illustrative. Regulatory barriers plus ability to deal with fraud at scale sets a very high hurdle. Not the kind of thing you can easily boo

Finding a reliable contractor for homeowners is very difficult. Traditionally, you found them via word of mouth (your neighbor hired a plumber who did a good job; your cousin the carpenter recommended a roof guy; etc)... you don't need a la

To quote the article: "We live in a world where spammers are a real problem and must be addressed, but CAPTCHAs are not the answer. You simply can not afford the friction. By using a CAPTCHA you are making the internet a whole lot less fun

Actually, there are quite a few "underground supper clubs" in NYC. Typically, they're held in private apartments with a prix fixe menu. One article from March on this trend: http://www.theatlantic.com/food/archive/2010/03/going-rogue-...

No, I think apartments really are scarce. It's not like landlords are sitting on vast quantities of inventory to drive up rents. That said, rent regulation (mostly rent stabilization vs. rent control, these days) does skew the market, creat

Yeah, our neighbor pretty blatantly runs an illegal hotel out of her house in Brooklyn. Usually it's fine but she often has young, European guests who like to party in her backyard (about 10 feet from our bedroom window) until 6am. Luckily

I think it's really important for the people building a product to spend at least some time doing tech support. Right now, my tech team of three (including me) all "see" every incoming tech support email and we rotate through who's responsi
