Just be glad you don't work on high-frequency trading systems if "tenths of a second" seems like a frustratingly small gain. Our office erupts into cheers when we shave a microsecond or even 500 nanoseconds off our loop times. :)

The whole company still fits in one conference room, so we all eat together. Unless something is broken, in which case people tend to scurry back to their desks after the food shows up.

This is exactly what it's like where I work. It's fun to grab lunch when you want/need it at the same time as others, but it's ultra-low-pressure and in no way mandatory. Best of all possible worlds, in my opinion, and a huge perk for any

Number 9 seems to directly contradict number 8. By your own rationale, you should speak freely about/to your boss. Alternatively you might try finding a job where you don't hate your boss.

I wonder if one could crack it even faster with more than 4 phones sniffing. Maybe 8 or 16 phones? You could easily fit those in a backpack, along with a 2TB external HDD. Assuming the sampling rate is the bottleneck, you could maybe get

Wonderful essay. I especially love this: I remember a conversation we had a year or so before his death, walking in the hills above Pasadena. We were exploring an unfamiliar trail and Richard, recovering from a major operation for the can

The now-defunct Northern Alliance were nationalists, led by Massoud. The Taliban (and I suspect most of the other insurgent groups) are Islamists.

"It was not clear if Liu himself had been told about the Nobel." This has to be one of the first, if not the first case of someone winning a Nobel Peace Prize and not being immediately allowed to know they'd won. The article mentions t

I recently subscribed to their development mailing list, and then rapidly unsubscribed. It was mostly an echo chamber of people (rightly) bashing the code written with no thought to "security as design principle" mixed with people (rightly

I've thought a lot about this exact problem. My ideas involved webcams and some scaling/modeling algorithms. This seems more...baroque, but probably more accurate than my ideas. Fascinating stuff.

Lot of illegal consumables innovation in NYC these days as well: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/nyregion/21nutcracker.html... With only two texts I could have a delicious grilled cheese and a nice styrofoam cup of Nutcracker!

Same setup here (a very small shop) - everyone usually just plugs in a 24" monitor to their MBP. Can't remember the last time I used a desktop tower. Notebooks, monitors, and servers are the offices of the future.
