Have you actually used ZFS? * ZFS doesn't include fsck because it doesn't make sense when your FS is guaranteed to be consistent. fsck is for when writes go bad because the window is there for that to happen. Your claim is like saying a an

I think they're looking for: import org.somelib.* x = new colors.RGBA(255, 255, 255, 0); So you don't have to bring all the classes into scope, but you don't have to write out the full path to use them either. Just the last bit of

This is a stupid question, but it's beyond difficult to search for an answer (I've really tried!): Can I import Java libraries into Go? If I can't find a Go library to do what I need, what are my options besides messaging to another process

I don't think understanding memory mapping has anything to do with data structures. I have no solid understanding of malloc or how it might be implemented, but RedBlackTrees, TernarySearchTress, LinkedLists, Hashtables, etc are all pretty e

So you have an easily identified problem to solve. Specification and Responding to Change are not mutually exclusive. You do the first. You get an estimate. When a change is mandated, you specify the change. You estimate it. When you discov

Does that mean that FreeBSD will become a bit of a second-class-citizen with the release of 9.2? Or are similar optimizations available and planned there?

That's 9 years. I've used Ruby for almost as long, and on MRI at least, I can't think of anything as significant. (JRuby FTW) Think of c#'s evolution. Ruby's. JavaScript's. SQL's. 9 years isn't exactly blazingly aggressive, but in the conte

About $12/hr. I did that once upon a time as a temporary job in San Antonio. Or maybe it was Austin. I forget the name of the company, but it was mostly small-batch PCBs carrying a hefty price tag. Throughput was probably 1 board a minute i

I can't remember ever saying this before, and it's not even really plausible considering how relatively small HN is, but some of the comments here feel like they're directly from the mouth of Tesla. I mean seriously. Cost doesn't matter? Ti

Developers perhaps not as well informed could do themselves a real disservice by reading your comment to mean this stuff doesn't matter. I think we'd agree that yes, Model instantiation most likely doesn't matter. On the other hand, Mod

It's been a long time, but I think your assumption is probably flawed. DataMapper isn't faster by accident. This benchmark is trivial. Try loading up 1,000 objects with an actual query for each O/RM and benchmark that. Then try a single obj

This might already be covered, but unless you're running a threaded server or have developed some other sort of centralized locking, it's not hard to get race conditions in the cache generation. For Basecamp it probably doesn't matter that

It would be nice to see a hello-world example with 1, 10, 100 sample routes. It's pretty easy to get a naive routing implementation perform really well with a handful of routes. The tables can easily turn in the context of a larger applicat

I think that's basically what the person you're replying to suggested as the ideal. For example, I work in a relatively open space with two different teams mixed in. It's also the central hub for all the offices. So if anyone feels like cha

So don't use MRI. Events are not a substitute for Threads, and Threads are really not as hard as people would like to claim when you're working at the level of an application developer. Keep in mind that hundreds of thousands (wild guess) .

Instead of 12 physical cores, 96GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD Array pushing 1M IOPs on dedicated hardware for my PostgreSQL database servers, I'd need 1TB of RAM in an AWS box because I'll be lucky if I can even break 10K in IOPs. Does the price

"tightly coupled" is the norm (I'd pick on Rubyists, but really it's the problem in any language I'm familiar with). It's hard to get over the hump. So I agree. On the other hand, I think it's also very pragmattic to say "this isn't working
