Is it really a good idea in any language though? I mean, if you're instantiating in your consumer, it feels like you're not really leveraging Composition. It's OK to pass a Class to an IoC container (my own Ruby version: https://github.com

You should try Sequel. It does things AR and DM don't (CPK+FK for example), is generally faster, and gives you the flexibility of working with Models or raw data-sets depending on what the situation calls for. I've used and written a number

Just to re-inforce this: While the initial memory spike can seem pretty unreasonable coming from a site with a couple Mongrels or something, converting to JRuby from a Unicorn site using 16 workers and over 2GB of RAM is very nice. You end

I've done this (GMail setup). Didn't work for me. It appears to be a common problem. I also installed a number of patches from Preware, but nothing to my knowledge really addresses any of these concerns. The "laggy" effects are software, no

Double-response, sue me. ;-) "Sole reason" I can't agree with, but WebOS has bugs that's for sure. I bought an HP Veer around Week 1. Last month I went back to my iPhone4 and I wouldn't go back (even before this announcement). The Veer lags

What happens with inflation and interest over that 75 year span? Does the mandate to pre-pay use some formula to take that into account? I'm not familiar with general accounting practices, but it seems like if it didn't it would be potentia

I guess I'm glad I haven't spent too much time with my Erlang book? (for profit, not fun) I mean, if I'm going to spend time learning all these warts, then at least with Java libs I've got options in how I choose to leverage it (Java, Jruby

You've probably figured this out by now, but I'm pretty sure you're missing the point. From your other comments in this thread you appear to think that the machine needs to be internet-accessible. Have a public IP. Open Firewall. All that.

No, I'm aware they're Linux problems. It just seems the mind-share is on KVM these days so I generally consider Linux Host Virtualization == KVM. You're absolutely correct though. It's not really KVM's fault. It's the Linux iscsi, software

I have two iSCSI Targets. I want to pull a LUN from each, and mirror on the KVM Host system, exposing the mirrored disks for my guests. Compared to using ZFS on OpenSolaris with Xen 3.1, this process is incredibly cumbersome and unreliable.

IIRC our R610's (96GB, 12 Cores @ 3GHz) were around $7K a piece. 256GB/32 Core/1.8GHz R910s are around $22K last I looked. This stuff really is stupid cheap in comparison to renting. You'd need to talk to a Sales person to get that kind of

Minor correction, YARV, written by ko1, has never been a part of the Ruby 1.8.x line to my knowledge. Some language features, (mostly stdlib I think) were back-ported in 1.8.7, but 1.8.x is and always has been an interpreter where 1.9.x has

The same sluggishness applies to iTunes as well. Plus, one of the easier experiments is to swap in Google's DNS servers. Then the AppleTV is snappy for a few days. After awhile, slow-loading thumbs again. Swap back in the 2wire DNS, and sna

I reliably get 12Mbps reported from speedtest.net on my 12Mbps advertised AT&T UVerse service. The problem is speedtest.net is useless since AT&T is clearly gaming me and them, prioritizing the traffic and bandwidth. My normal surfi

I think #1 covers it. It feels a bit awkward to even refer to file-level hashing and lookup as de-duplication as it's more commonly known in block-level de-dupe. Regardless, on documents it's probably safe to assume they get close to 2:1 co

An IdentityMap would resolve the issue with your second-layer cache, allowing you to select only the columns necessary, which can be a very significant win. Ruby O/RMs for example generally take a big hit from loading date/time-columns. If

You make a valid point, but I think it's missing the forest. The example I posted actually results in a Fixnum. It's addition, not multiplication. Simple math operations are an admittedly terrible way to demonstrate the point I was trying t

A 10% performance penalty to get down and dirty with your Domain Model and go all HSQL isn't exactly a big price to pay. Take a peek at Paul's benchmark. Iterate and instantiated 100K empty objects in 10s. That's crazy. You're talking abo

I don't use Rails. I see the JVM as a tool that gives me access to code I might find useful, and web-servers that are (IMO) 1000X superior to anything available to MRI. That and much better performance than REE anyways. If you need C-extens
