That’s fascinating. How is it that we seem to have lost that capability to do things in software over so few decades?

Regularization might give better solutions, but it’s no more optimizing the stated objective, and often runs counter. In some cases, regularization is explicit and by choice, but it’s also often implicit and not under control.

Btw, don’t let my cheeky comment detract from a perceptive & reflective article. Please do read. And here’s another article by the author in a related vein: https://zandercutt.com/2020/05/22/we-are-all-the

Here’s the challenge: could you ever specify an objective function concretely enough to sustain an assault by aggressive optimization? https://thezvi.wordpress.com/2019/12/31/does-big-business-ha... In all

While I like and use (and even recommend) Archlinux, Debian’s track record is absolutely venerable. It’s a huge accomplishment to carry so many people and an ecosystem along with you over decades, doing all the unsexy tasks (the number of p

Bingo! It’s boil-the-ocean level crazy to attempt to recreate the environment for a particular file, when the sensible approach would be to just have the file format and it’s reader/viewer software be open so it can be recompiled or po

Right, but that is using a semi-classical calculation, whereas we know that ultimately any process (evolution of a closed system like the universe) compatible with quantum mechanics needs to be unitary/reversible. That mismatch is what

I think a practical means to achieving this would be to self-organize and create the hardware+software design and a proof concept for this. That makes it much easier for those concerned to stress-test it, and then point to benefits, since t

It’s not that bad... in fact, quite the opposite :-) Whenever we peel back a layer to discover new physics, the old models are never lost, since the new models must necessarily reduce to those in more familiar situations! Another factor is

How does this compare with having a Github/Sourcehut like "website" hosted via IPFS? It appears that Git's versioning model might be nicely compatible with IPFS.
