I’ve spent a lot of time with Django, and not a lot of time with rails. For me, if I was doing minimalist CRUD and wanted to ship to mobile or a lot of users, I’d reach for Rails. Hotwire and Turbo seem great, and the ecosystem just seems b

1. Nobody is producing software to the highest standards of the industry. The best quality code I’ve ever seen was from very methodical recent grads who spent way, way too long writing it. Literally everybody else is cutting corners. Try no

My experience is that in getting a state ID, you need birth certificate or another document. In the case of a state without voter ID, there is no check — you literally just have to bring an electric bill. A non citizen could easily vote. It

It depends on the state but generally just requires proof of address or ID, I registered in Illinois with nothing but a phone bill.

I certainly don’t think we should restrict voting to landowners but maybe having a minimum requirement for citizens to participate in democracy (having an ID) isn’t a bad thing. I think the concern with not requiring ID is that it could all

What are the advantages over something like Wordpress? What are the advantages over something like Laravel or Django? My assessment of Drupal is that it really is only for enterprise blogs - it doesn’t offer the things a more robust framewo

Is anybody really doing CRUD with SSGs? I would think surely not… but I’m happy to be corrected

Sure, but you don’t really have read/write capability. As an example, I set up an e-commerce store on Gatsby using server side JS, but I was reliant on the hosted Stripe product CMS API, which ultimately wasn’t a great user or developm

CGI / PHP is really not a bad way to work in 2024, even though I was traumatized by PHP in my early days. I’ve only experimented with it though, I think it would be hard to maintain at scale, and I’ve heard there are not insignificant

In practice, there are a lot of non-technical users who can navigate the Wordpress backend. I’m not saying it’s particularly well designed, just that the large install base has led to a far larger number of experienced users.

I struggled with Drupal when I used it. I was responsible for taking over a crowdfunding site which had been built in Drupal and as an intermediate Wordpress and Django developer, I found Drupal’s learning curve insane and it felt like the

“Extremely minor server-side functionality thing” is where SSGs fail miserably. All of a sudden you’re using SaaS forms or whatever else, or your self hosting some other tremendously inferior CMS and your margins go out the window. Wordpres

Former webdev, so don’t really understand the industry too well, but my sense is that Wordpress is the lowest hanging fruit if you need customer facing CMS, or e-commerce, or any number of other plug and play features. Hugo might be easier

What better alternative is there as a webdev? Genuinely looking for answers from a production perspective. Most successful shops I meet or talk to are all-in on Wordpress and I don’t think this drama has affected this calculation. Big India

People dismiss this type of work as no big deal, but in my experience this is the actual hard work of producing something useful for companies, and what 90% of SaaS resellers will never be able to deliver on.

I haven’t had any luck being able to effectively generate compositions with text to image / text to video. Prompts like “subject in the lower third of the frame” have thus far completely failed me. I’m sure this will change in the futu
