Take what I say with a few grains of salt - I'm one of those weirdos whose always tried to be at least a little bit different - to avoid ever becoming wholly "in". But, in my experience, othering isn't going to drive people away, not in any

Ugh... the reactions to these idiotic, misogynistic statements always feel overblown. Yes, sexism is a pretty big problem in the industry (and adjacent ones). But you're not going to fix it by griping about a horny 20-something saying somet

Oh look: a comment not critical of, but nevertheless about, colleges, is being downvoted on HN. Stop my beating heart. The current "college is a waste of money/time" trend got boring rather quickly - at this point, it's just extraordinarily

+1 from me. I don't actually benefit from the new behavour much more than the current behaviour (my personal usage pattern results in me wanting to always push all branches), but it logically makes much more sense. As noted elsewhere, it's

This is one of the few instances where I disagree with that attitude. The risks involved in relocating ill-studied life forms are, obviously, enormous, and it does need careful and dispassionate consideration. I'd much rather risk a mildly

Here's what I don't understand. How are scientific projects constantly having funding crises? The set of people who are most interested in seeing Kepler, JWST, etc. succeed strongly overlaps the set of people who have the sort of money need

Not so clearly after all. The harm caused by the orders may well be less than the harm caused to the social structures in the group by one or two people disobeying - or by everyone disobeying, and the group needing to somehow select a new a

I disagree. The FBI, DHS, TSA and so on /can/ be defeated through humiliation - you just have to keep at it until enough voters get the message for a few politicians to use "regulate XYZ" and "abolish the ABC" as mechanisms for political ga
