Valve released the server binary one day before the client launch, and you could use that to register with steam. I knew someone with a two digit steam id from that.

Yeah my in-laws were somewhat well off at one point but one of them lost their job two decades ago and emptied their 401k with penalties so they could maintain their standard of living. Last year we bought them a house so the working spouse

I vaguely remember that I could participate in the employee purchase program. This was during the financial crisis though and I was an undergrad intern with a paltry ability to invest. Even if I had hit received some great stock award in al

I interned at NVIDIA in 2009 on the kernel mode driver team. Was super fun there in terms of the project work and the people. If the code still exists, I created the main class that schedules work out to the GPU on Windows. That level of pr

I remember bringing a postgresql book to a sleepover when I was in high school around 2002. An IRC friend was on the pgsql advocacy mailing list and we were all obsessed. Now were we cool? I have my doubts. We sure thought pgsql was cool th

Honking your horn and getting the person to pull away is pretty fast. By comparison it takes several minutes to get through to 911 where I live. Not to mention most humans would know better than to park in front of a fire department drivewa

Not that there's any excuse but I can imagine this was a recruiter who had to fill a bay area position. There are plenty of higher ups in the NYC Google office.

That's true but the treasury will price their interest rates to get buyers. If it goes high enough buyers will emerge unless there is nobody with faith in the government paying it back.

Any loan getting repaid technically "destroys" the money unless new replacement lending is made. It's because the money was created when it was lent out, i.e. banks are allowed to lend money they don't have up to a point

If Netflix wasn't sharing costs in upgrading peering links I agree, but I never understood that to be the point of the debate. Instead it's that ISPs want to rate and charge differently for different providers / content types

There have been so many layoffs that there is a glut of software engineers looking for jobs. The company's leadership knows that now, with labor supply up, they don't need to pay people the compensation they're currently payi
