Is this really true? If you look at the top grossing movies, they're all studio blockbuster vehicles. The cost of star salaries, huge marketing splashes, etc are still as bad as ever. I don't see any evidence that the COGs for producing the

I suspect it is way cheaper to buy an engineering team (and IP/patents in this case?) as a unit rather than chase every engineering hire separately and try and construct a team afterwards.

This is a stunning development and most of MSFT is probably in shock right now. It's hard to overstate the scope and influence Sinofsky had at MSFT. This was a man widely expected to be the next CEO and he had impact way outside his organiz

If you had to fill out a YC application for ViaWeb back then when you initially had an idea and a working demo, how do you think you'd have fared? For example, while it was very obvious that your team had high skill (given your academic cre

Social proof can influence funding. And TC is one avenue to get social proof.

You target various audiences separately with your PR. Techcrunch, while terrible for acquiring users in most categories, is great - probably a must - for raising funding and hiring.

This is the result of nearly a decade of work from MSFT, across the board. They built better tools, drilled security into every new hire all the way to the execs, made it a part of every engineering and product process imaginable. Happy tha

I somehow enjoyed this a lot more than a lot of the tech press interviews with VCs, unknown analysts, etc.

Interesting timing. The NYTimes has a piece today on Dick Costolo[1] which mentions Peter Thiel talking about Twitter employees heading home early and how Costolo is staying at work late to get employees to do the same thing. Even the leadi

Someone I know runs a startup which just got an acquisition offer which would have given him $5-7m, a few years out of college with the acquirer was paying 1.1x their current valuation. He chose to turn it down since he thought his investor

The funny thing is that the people I know who've worked on ads have some of the most in-demand skill sets around. It turns out that most successful consumer internet companies in the last decade have had to turn to some form of advertising

I would think you would want someone who actually understands the patent system and the patent process on the jury of a landmark patent trial.

I was surprised by the resumes of the people on the jury given the flack they've received from the tech press. These were some very qualified people, much more so than the tech press that criticized them. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-

You could but who's to say that Apple can't find other patents in their portfolio to come after you with (or MSFT can't extract their Android licensing for you). Apple wants to destroy the Android ecosystem and they're going to take any leg

Any of those are atleast a couple of years away from becoming realistic. Windows Phone has an app ecosystem today, the muscle/deep pockets of MSFT behind it and frankly, it's a pretty good OS. It's a slam dunk at the moment.

The big winner, apart from Apple, is Microsoft. If you're a hardware manufacturer, your choices are 1. You go with Android and have both Apple and Microsoft come after you. 2. You go with Windows Phone. I suspect the Windows Phone team is b

If you're a startup and even if you're philosophically opposed to software patents, think about hiring a good IP law firm and filing for your core IP. What these trials and massive licensing deals are showing that patents could make a world

Isn't that backwards? I'm in favor of making things easier for startups in most cases but here, I feel like people should bias towards making things safer and more accessible, even if that means a bunch of startups can't find a place.
