If I leave MSFT, this is the one person I'll sorely miss. An admin at a large company is a life saver for so many reasons.

Interesting. Does the import feature screen scrape then (fill in credentials, act 'as' the user'? Doesnt sound very scalable.

True but what are the API endpoints? How does one actually get data out of someone?

Wow. I'm an engineer at Microsoft. I don't know what this particular site is about (from poking around, it seems to be targeted at education) but I can assure you that career paths and employee reviews at Microsoft have nothing to do with h

I was chatting with someone about the language used in a lot of these apologies. This has come up in a lot of issues - like in the Justin.tv suicide case. I think companies fear legal repercussions. If you use certain words, you might be ta

I dont see what the source can get you. In fact, given that Google reuses a lot of open source, the source code is probably out in public already. I think for Google, their data would be far more valuable. For their password systems, I gu

I think a lot of that is what companies want to do with AD. I doubt MSFT is in the business of deciding what people's password policies should be (apart from picking a sane default). I do think passwords today fail basic usability tests.

SO did successfully create a community. I think they ran into the problem that SO itself was successful because of the 'personal brand' of Jeff Atwood and Joel and this didn't extend easily to other communities. Or maybe it is because the c

Sometimes, big companies like the one I work for (Microsoft) or Google or Yahoo get beaten up for having 'obvious' bugs or failures. People say that given the scale of our resources, we should do better and perhaps they're right. In this ca

Windows ships with the .NET framework which has the C# and VB compilers (and may have others - I'm not sure). This is not counting things like Powershell, Javascript, VBScript (all command line versions). For developer tools, VS Express ha

I think #1 is a lot more complex than just basic clarifying questions. The key is to understand the context . Where is this code going to be running? Who is going to call it? In what scenarios will it be called? Things like that. I remembe

Bruce and danah are arguing from completely different perspectives. I think danah's talk needs to be read in its entirety - it fits in also with some of her other work around the demographic and ethnographic issues around social networks h

For asynchronous, web hooks may not be the answer if clients can be behind a firewall. It's too much work to set up an externally accessible resource just for this. Polling or some sort of "job" resource works great too. When we designed th

I'm getting a bit tired of all this revisionist history from several years ago (this anecdote seems to be 13 years old). Especially on places which don't understand how the inside of MSFT works (and has evolved over time). Also, I'm willing

Sounds like a great way to drown the team in process. I don't mean to sound snarky but you often need to find the right balance between process and making sure the team can write code and ship features without having to spin up a ton of pap

American Express is the worst offender. They don't accept my usually long passwords/passphrases so I had to conjure up a shorter password just for their system.

There was some speculation internally on this too (I work at MSFT). One theory is that Ashley Tisdale is involved in charity work too and Bill might know her personally. No idea as to how true that is though :)
