There is a lot of discussion about "functional programming" without a consensus on what constitutes that and what are paraphernalia. A notion exists in a word form when it has some definition, even if it cannot be articulated we

> Edit: Actually, the Haskell version can be O(1) in memory as the front of the list can be garbage collected, while the C++ version is O(n) in memory. Do you expect the following code to run in constant space? head (drop 100000000

You're partially right, but function composition features in the type world too. For example, when you say - data Tree a = Leaf a | Branch (Tree a) (Tree a) It looks like you're dealing purely with types, however you&#x

I feel a bit sorry for people getting introduced to "functional programming" from the imperative world. The plethora of language features available in FLs distracts them from the main endeavour of FP - which is modeling your pro

This makes sense. Another thing I noticed is that once an app is installed on your phone, it acts like an always present advert. In other words, apps are now the equivalent of having an "icon on the desktop" in the old world. I re

ARDB[1] seems like a good choice if you want the convenience of Redis and disk persistence. It is like a Redis that's backed by Facebook's RocksDB. The redis protocol support of ARDB is pretty good. [1]: https://github.

It seems possible to apply Paul Graham's "blub language" principle to the Kardashev civilization categories. It may boggle the mind of a type N civilization to imagine use for the kinds of energies that a type N+1 civilizatio

I wish for a browser with Scheme as the underlying language in which all is expressed. A Racket browser. No html/script/css distinction. Just s-expressions. A page is just code and it is run in a sandbox.

It would've been nice if mathematical induction were indicated as the foundation of recursion. You're not assuming "it does the right thing" and then proving "it does the right thing". What you're doing is

Gargantua is a spinning "Kerr" blackhole in the movie. The nearly maximally spinning blackhole is central to the movie plot as it is the reason Miller's planet can be in the orbit it is claimed to be, tidally locked to the sp

While the "spin it around" explanation is useful at a certain level, this "basis understanding" is useful in a different domain - quantum physics. Position and momentum are two such dual bases, as are energy and time. In

The significant question here is whether providers will offer this both ways - i.e. symmetrical uplink/downlink. If the asymmetry is going to persist, then game over for DSL, welcome fibre.

Yup. The way I like to express this is as follows - It took Einstein about 10 years to formulate the general theory of relativity, needing no further experimental input into the work during this period. A few other scientists such as Wheele

That's a weird stance. If there are complexities that programmers face that can be absorbed by a compiler, it must be, because that would pay off for every programmer , in every project, in every bug prevented.
