The difficulty of assessing the value of the work being done is indeed great. One way to look at this difficulty is as a significantly higher order phenomenon. What I mean is that if science is the discovery of regularities in nature, techn

It's either a tool or a weapon depending on who wields it. I recall Nokia folks pooh-poohing the iPhone because in the metrics they valued, their Symbian phones were beating it.

About the only useful genralization has been differentiable programming - I.e. AD embedded in a programming language to help mix learning some functions from data. But this is not a consequence of clubbing the aforesaid two.

You don't need to treat "[cos(x)]^2 + [sin(x)]^2 = 1" separately either. e^(iθ) times e^(-iθ) = e^(iθ-iθ) = e^0 = 1 = (cosθ+isinθ)(cosθ-isinθ) = cos²θ + sin²θ

This isn't theoretical any more. My state (tamil nadu/india) has banned plastic bags and cups .. generally what we might think of as single use. You have to take your own bags or (in some shops) buy reusable+degradable cloth bags.
