The wave is almost like a live character in this one. Like an angry god caught in a moment of fury.

Indeed. Check this out https://dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/1899550/1/11/ I don't know whether Escher was familiar with Hokusai's work but they shared a common interest in tilings and tesselations. Damned

Oh nice. I had not seen this before but it fits the description very well -- birds and tiling patterns. The art work that I had in my had a swallow or a sparrow swooping down, looked at through chicken wire grid.

Thanks for the links. There are one or two in common with what I had in mind. I suppose those weren't his 'published' works but personal studies in geometry and tiling.

I am having a surprisingly hard time finding Hokusai's exercises on tesselations. Has search become really this bad ! Anyway wanted to show his sketch of a bird behind chicken wire fence/cage. Similar birds here https://

Harrison time pieces were indeed the cutting edge GPS technology of its day. That and moon watching. Nowadays we have GPS and Pulsar / Quasar watching. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very-long-baseline_interferome..

I would argue the opposite, with the 'often' doing some heavy lifting. It is very likely that you have interacted with a Levenstein distance based spell corrector (with many modifications) and I have touched that code. Used well t

Would agree. There's another thing that's a little odd. Tall men rock climbers tends to do better, but among women, it's the smaller ones who seem to be better.

Not just endurance sports. Anecdotal evidence, but female rock climbers have been more skilled in my experience. Perhaps because the brute force escape hatch isn't as available.

If enough people at position of influence fear that a war is coming, the fear itself will realize the anticipated event. Preemptive strikes will be the trigger. There is some truth to, what was it, Soros' reflexivity.

Wonderful. Knitting and weaving gets me nerd sniped. Not the act of actually doing them by hand but the geometric puzzle solving part. These topics hit the HN first page quite often.
