Any sources that the Nexus is actually built in Korea without Foxconn involvement? Samsung is a Foxconn customer.

I'm not sure what marknutter's intent was, but Foxconn really manufactures a lot of stuff beyond smartphones. PCs typically have Foxconn parts in them, as do routers. Any tablet you own has a good probability of being touched by Foxconn.

Foxconn builds a lot more than iPhones. Take a look at all their customers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn#Major_customers If you own computer equipment or a smart phone, there's a pretty good chance that something that you own wa

One has to be willing and open to learning to be educated. Often, people discussing politics or economics feel that their understanding is already good and have no desire to learn. This is the main reason that these topics tend to turn in

You don't have to be trapped in the ecosystem. I made a transition from a .Net ecosystem into Linux + Java a while back. It's hard, but not impossible, especially if you keep up to date with your non-.Net skills.

Boycotts against the other companies have been discussed. It was explained to me as wanting to make an example. Rather than spreading a boycott out over 149 companies, they wanted to pick one or two and dog-pile on them, so that the effec

When I read it, the message I took away was that current sexist gender roles tend to force men into being breadwinners as opposed to caregivers. Women being a breadwinner with a male caregiver is still looked upon as kind-of curious in cer

As tempting as it is to simply look at the raw facts, context does matter in a situation like this. The software industry is still male-dominated, and that can be intimidating and draining for people who are not male. Have you ever gone to

Kind-of tangentially related, but I find that there's a high tendency for people to interrupt other people and speak over others. This often leads to poorly-thought-out discussions, because people are rushing to get a word in edge-wise. A

Maybe I'm just cynical, but I think that's because discussing constitutionality isn't a winning strategy. Constitutionality hasn't been a primary concern in the legislative process for a while, especially when internet commerce is involved

I don't use my feelings regarding the manner as a measure of reasonableness. I've really tried to understand Stallman's arguments, but I really can't come to agree that proprietary software is, in and of itself, unethical.

I agree. I was trying to offer a data point to lambda's question about how someone might "stand against" Stallman. I suppose I went off on a tangent. I agree with the gist behind the article that we should not attack Stallman based on th

I think the argument, with regards to Jobs, was rather that Stallman was inappropriate on writing his statements so soon after Job's death. Edit: To clarify, the bulk of the arguments where not against his ideas but rather directly concern

I can't speak for kenjackson, but Stallman states that writing proprietary software is unethical, and I find that idea unpalatable. I generally think that its better for software to be open, but I don't think a person who writes a piece of

As I have an interest in video games, the all-FOSS-no-proprietary approach is particularly troublesome. You see very few indie games being done as FOSS, and pretty much zero high-quality big-production games. Proposals for a system of fun

As with most big companies, whether its a caustic environment or not really depends on which team you're working for. The culture instilled by your manager or manager's manager is more powerful than the corporate culture as a whole.

Interesting. To summarize, it looks like the $50 loss comes from an analyst comparing it to the iPad, whereas the $50 profit claim comes from a firm comparing it to the more-similar BlackBerry Playbook. The research firm that did a tear-d

Has that been confirmed? I've heard anywhere from $5 to $50, and its always been from analysists trying to estimate the cost from parts. As far as I know, the only people who really know how much the Kindle costs to make are Amazon.
