Graphics drivers is one of the rare if not the only pain point with static linking. The reason is that drivers in general should be part of the kernel but GPU drivers are running in userspace. Proprietary blobs, fast evolving hardware and

The solution is very simple: static linking. Dynamic linking should be completely abolished. This would also solve the "package manger problem" immediately because there will be no dependencies.

If you don't want to write a new window manager from scratch you could use icewm with the companion program icesh and implement this behavior in bash.

Many of the points of this talks are invalidated with the introduction of DRI3 others are still valid but Wayland is not a solution. The X server indeed "just transfers messages between clients" but so does a Wayland compositor.

GTK is a GNOME library and GNOME has shown in the past that they not only don't care about third party software but are actually extremely harmful to the community to the point that you might as well call it sabotage. The transition fr

The only thing that Wayland standardizes is multi process GPU memory access. Neither GNOME nor KDE (which are far more popular Wayland implementations) use any of the wlroots "standards" and thus they can not really be called as s

Personally I like the modularity of X11 because it has a lot of standardized interfaces. For example, you can exchange the window manager and the compositing manager at runtime without affecting any running programs. In my opinion X12 sho

On a technical/conceptual level X11 can potentially be the best of both worlds and Wayland can't. In practice drivers and programs have bugs, sure. But that can not be blamed on X11 as protocol/API.

Also GTK4 means they are still at the mercy of GNOME which changes APIs often and without consideration for third parties. Wasn't the whole point of the project to emancipate themselves from GNOME? If they rely on GTK they will fail.
