I've just started listening to the episode, but on the subject of public-radio-for-developers, I've always thought it would be interesting, or at least possible, to do a "Car Talk" for programmers, where people call in with thorny bugs and

I had high hopes on reading the title, but as noted in TFA, this only really works if none of your users ever bookmark a page or follow a link from Google or another website. He's using a very limited definition of "all traffic", namely "al

I happen know a lot of HR people from different organizations and have discussed this very question with them. As a class, they seem discourage this sort of background research, and to strongly discourage hiring managers from doing it direc

I agree that "hacking" connotes more than simply "coding". I'm not going to venture more complete definition here, but I think a lot of the themes around "unix culture" (e.g., small pieces loosely joined), open source (e.g. bazaar vs. cathe

That was disappointing. A nice survey of Oatmeal comics, but there was very little "how to" information in this presentation.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I think we should be careful that "hacker" doesn't lose meaning altogether. This thread is coming close to defining "hacking" as simply "winning". That is, if it works, it's hackerly, if it doe

Omniture is rather expensive and somewhat difficult to use. Scalability won't be a problem with either. A more fundamental decision point is understanding what kinds of information you want to track:what metrics are important to you? You're

If you are trying to get people to actually use this, I'd suggest letting anonymous visitors create a list immediately (and then register to save it). As a random web user, I'd need a more compelling reason to register, let alone hand over

FWIW, I happen to have worked with and even hired a fairly large number (maybe 5) of folks that once worked for Playboy. As far as I could tell (and certainly as far as I was concerned) there was no stigma associated with this, even at mode

Thomas, were you intentionally choosing a bland/generic logo in an effort to prove your point? Just from glancing at the 99 Designs logo store, here's a few logos that, while still generic (in the sense that they have nothing to do with bi

Interesting research, link-bait headline. I don't understand what the first paragraph (regarding "metrosexual" men) has to do with the rest of the article or research. Is modesty considered a metrosexual trait? I think I'd associate metro

More often than not, it's these sort of comments that sadden me most when reading HN. I actually expected the OP to be about this very topic. Although my account isn't very old, I've lurked at HN off and on for quite a while. It is my impr

I actually found the last line: Facebook paid [ConnectU] $65m to go away. to be the most interesting. I don't follow the Facebook story very closely, but I had no idea that much money changed hands over the ConnectU thing.

Believe me, I won't, but note that the "same content from multiple domains" problem is precisely what spinning sets out to solve. It's not the same content, certainly not at a superficial level.

I don't know exactly. What's a tiny bit of link juice worth? What's a tiny edge in Google ranking worth? If it is simply sending an email, then, sure I'll spend two minutes doing that. If I need to engage a lawyer, no it's probably not wort

In a crude fashion this isn't difficult to do: Simply look for things like emotionally charged words and phrases, certain sentence structures, or maybe even word and sentence length. This is a fairly well studied area, search on the keyword

I'll second this feedback, and add one other minor point: I wouldn't use the acronym (or is that an abbreviation since it is not pronounceable?) "IaaS" as part of that signup form. I do a lot of work with SaaS and it took me a minute to fi

May I recommend that if you're new to Ruby and especially if you're new to programming as a whole you may be better off with web framework like Sinatra rather than Rails. Rails has a lot of "magic" and a fair bit of code generation that is
