the most painful design loss on the new MBPs is the lack of MagSafe. When that came out it was just so obvious that it was the best way to do it, but now it is gone.

Thanks for this. I love the Computer History Museum so much. I need to make time for another visit out there...

Were these early ICs prototyped with discrete components on breadboards? Simulated with programs on mainframes? I assume most of the drafting for the masking was done manually. Just curious how the design process worked at this stage in the

Usually my use case is connecting to either MSSQL or postgresql servers, but occasionally MySQL as well... I don't think Sequel Pro does anything other than MySQL, does it?

I use it to run esoteric windows-only software on my mac. For instance many ham radio programs are ancient and windows-only, many work fine in Wine. Also I like to run HeidiSQL in Wine because there's not really an equivalent swiss-arm

I've been using Google Voice since before it was Google Voice (it was called GrandCentral before Google acquired it). I've been fearing that Google was going to silently kill it constantly because of the lack of attention. Guess t

Maybe I'm just overly paranoid but I've never understood the appeal of Slack - I personally don't want to ship all of my internal proprietary business communications offsite to a third party.

I very much get the same sense from the uptick in VR over the past year or two that I did when 3D TV was all the craze several years ago - kind of interesting, but in practice not very good

Yes - X.509 client certificates are the authentication mechanism (TLS mutual authentication). How this generally works with other HTTP servers (i.e. nginx) is the proxy validates that the client's certificate are issued by a given auth

Is the certificate or its parameters (subject/issuer/alt names/etc) available to set downstream headers (for proxy/fastcgi)? I'm sure I'm missing it, but can't see anything like that in the docs. Or is thi

the PIV and OpenPGP apps don't seem to require the physical interaction, but do require a PIN entry (just like a traditional smartcard).

I think the main source of the confusion is that the connector is called USB-C, but devices that use the connector may not be USB devices at all, since they can fully expect to only be used with devices that support a specific alternate mod

USB-C does natively support DisplayPort as an alternate mode. Whether your particular device does is not a given, though. the 12" MacBook definitely does, the specs specifically call out the native support: http://www.apple.

This is pretty demonstrably false. I have a USB-C port on my Windows machine and I just plugged in a TB3->TB2 adapter, then plugged a TB ethernet adapter into that. Windows machine pops up an error when plugging it in, no new devices app

Honestly to me the worst thing about the new MacBook Pro isn't that there are no legacy ports on it or that the battery may be smaller, it's that the new all-things-for-all-people ports it has are confusing. The ports are all Thun

Do you hold any insurance policies, like on a home or a car? It's roughly the same thing. You pay into a system, and you may never have to use it, but you'll be glad it's there if you ever do need it.

Calorie cutting is definitely part of it, but it is not the whole picture. I've done calorie-restrictive diets that were more carb-based (low-fat) in the past and saw very minor weight loss in comparison. I think this works differently

Article is paywalled, but anecdotally, last year I inched past that magic A1C reading where the doctor tells you you are Type 2 Diabetic. I switched to a low-carb/high-fat diet ( https://reddit.com/r/keto ) and fa
