so how many LE's do these cores consume compared to a similar RISC-V or any other CPU design? Are there advantages just beyond familiarity of ARM?

They did do this for SNES: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Power_(cartridge) Obviously it was limited to games that did not use enhancement chips as you mention.

Nintendo did this extensively in Japan, first with the Disk Writer for the Famicom Disk System and then later with Nintendo Power kiosks for Super Famicom and Gameboy.

Wouldn't you have needed to use a Japanese text encoding (JIS?) and a corresponding font to get the "tsu" (ツ) kana in pre-Unicode days?

some have the configuration memory on-die as well to keep part count down. Also good to help protect your bitstream, but this isn't infallible of course.

Crazy to think about the range of devices the architecture supported, from small battery-powered things to giant multi-rack SGI Onyx machines. I'm still impressed with my dual-R12000 Octane today.
